Hello all!!!

Seeing as this is my first post I would first like to say hello and thanks. I would also like to mention that this is a magnificent site.

Ok, well what SWIM is wondering is if he can replace sodium hydroxide(NaOH) in nomans tek with sodium carbonate, he saw it thrown out there as an idea, since around here we have a feeling that anyone buying it would have one of those unpleasant talks with the authorities. Well SWIM is hoping to get some good feedback as least as far as my question goes, though if it isn't too much trouble SWIM is also wondering how SWIM would substitute it in the tek, and go about getting sodium carbonate.

Thanks all :D

Sodium Carbonate is not a suitable replacement for NaOH in a Straight To Base tek like Noman's, it is not strong enough. You can use Sodium carbonate in an Acid/Base extraction though. You can find sodium carbonate as soda ash or PH up in the pool supply section of major retail chains.

Or you can make it by baking Sodium Bi-crbonate in the oven at 400f for an hour. Cover it a bit so it doesn't spit everywhere, but make sure it is not air tight.

Thank you very much for the input.
Well is there a suitable replacement for NaOH that SWIM can use in nomans tht will give me just as good a yield ???

In my experience, sodium carbonate is a pain when doing an A/B. You end up with soooo much liquid that it's just... well it's inconvenient.

I don't think there's a good replacement for NaOH when it comes to an aqueous Straight to base tek though.
