Rotary vane pump? Were you pumping the rotovap? Too much vacuum, I think. If you did not have a cold trap between the pump and the system some DCM was unable to liquefy in the condenser and was pumped into your lab environment. I saw that happening even with a 2-stage diaphragm pump at vacuum around 300 mbar or less. There is a definite smell of DCM in the air.

Usually I remove most of DCM at 500 mbar and 35-37C. The higher the temp and the pressure, the better, because the water feeding the rotovap condenser is around 12C these days and I need the temp difference to be as high as possible for the condenser to work efficiently.

When the DCM stops dripping from the rotovap condenser I gradually lower the pressure to ~10-15 mbar (my diaphragm pump would not go lower than that and I am too lazy to switch to a rotary vane).

P.S. Sorry for telling some obvious things to real chemists, but it could be of some help to aspiring ones.

Found this in the debris of a school which gonna be raze soon.

A bit of cleaning and it's time to start a new extraction 8)
