pre-anything naptha defat

one was reading about soaking ground bark in naptha first and foremost to absorb impurities, then discarding naptha.

one was wondering what the best way to filter the naptha out of the bark in order to keep all of the bark intact. on thinks that the holes in t shirts are too big and would allow bark particles to fall through. additionally, coffee filters would take forever, and arent an option.

what is this "cheese cloth" people talk about?
 
Cheese cloth is a loose-woven cloth (holes are much bigger than the holes in a T-shirt... you can generally find it at the grocery store on the baking aisle if you're interested. But it sounds like a muslin cloth strainer is what you'd more likely want for this.

Also bear in mind that doing this defat postulates that the DMT exists exclusively as a salt in the plant (I don't recall whether this is a valid assumption)... any DMT freebase in there is going to get washed into the naphtha.

I think that if you need to defat, you should either go acid/base and defat the acidified rootbark mixture. Or you could go straight to base, then do an acidic wash to get your spice out of the naphtha, defat the acidic wash, add lye to get the DMT into freebase form again and collect back into your nonpolar solvent.
