Problem: DMT in ethanol. How to separate it?

I tell you that a few days ago looking for ways to purify DMT of the remains of hexane, found in the FAQ wiki for this website:

The fact is that I tried to purify with ethanol, I poured just a little ethanol to my crystals DMT, I wait for more than a day and this is not evaporated, in fact it shows almost the same initial volume, appearance is as an oil without any precipitate.

Does anyone know if this will really evaporate?

I hypothesized that ethanol might behave as an acid and donate a proton to the amine of DMT and form something like a coordinate bond, or a complex between alcohol and DMT

anyone know if adding a little acidic substance would help precipitate DMT in salt form? for then evaporate more quickly

Does anyone know if heat is bad? if a chemical reaction may occur at the time of introduce heat, because maybe this impede me make a hexane extraction. Consider that is possible it have a minimum amount of NaOH because I forget to wash with sodium carbonate.

What is the percentages, or proof, of the ethanol you used? Idk about your location, but in the US, you can't purchase pure etoh. There is likely a significant amount of water in yours that will take some time to evap. I don't have anything to say to your chemistry ?

Ethanol should evaporate in less than a day but the speed depends on lots of things -
Temperature, humidity, percent of ethanol, amount of DMT/ethanol being used.

If you have it in a jar/cup or something similar it can take a bit longer. You might want to spread it out on a plate in that case.
Heat will definitely speed up evaporation but is more likely to give you goo than anything easy to handle like crystals.
A fan speeds it up a lot too.

If you have for example 40% ethanol, the other 60% is likely water which takes ages to evap.
Hopefully you have 80+ percent.

DMT and ethanol do not react in any way as far as I know and salting the DMT won't make it evap faster or precipitate because I'm pretty sure its salts are also soluble in ethanol.

You can't purchase pure ethanol because it forms an azeotrope with water. Some states in the US allow the sale of this proof, and some do not. Ethanol and water are miscible. Perhaps dilute the alcohol to a low concentration of ethanol, base it as much as possible, and extract it with warm naptha or heptane.

anyone of you advise me naphtha for some reason? because this is cheap? Does this leave impurities or residues to evaporate?

DCM = dichloro methane (methylene dichloride). Yes, it is a solvent. And DMT is quite soluble in it.

Naptha should NOT leave a residue. If it does you'll have to remove the additive or find a different naptha. If you dilute the azeotrope and basify the water perhaps you can easily collect your spice using a solvent it is more soluble in.

Also:

Try placing your EtOH in a baking dish with a fan, that will speed things up considerably. You have a lot of choices on hand.

DCM is also quite toxic, please be careful. And DMT reacts with it to form a chlorinated compound after extended periods, so if you use it please make it quick and salt DMT out of it or evap it quick (in well ventilated area). I'd avoid it altogether.

I think I'd try to further evaporate it first, by putting whatever is left in a wide glass dish and scrapping/rescraping it ocasionally until it starts crystalizing. DMT doesnt react with ethanol, it should still be in freebase form (unless your alcohol was impure and had some acid added or something else weird?).

Last case scenario if after a couple of days more it doesnt crystallize, re-extract with warm hexane.

nothing wrong with a slow evap. Sometimes I'll let my solvent sit out for a couple days prior to chilling/freeze precip. Then I'll put my nice gems into a vial for further ..uhm. "analysis".

Patience can be rewarding, don't give up =]

Now alls you need to do is heat up some naptha and dissolve what's there. My advice is to use as little as possible, nice hot naptha. Then allow it to cool/evap until crystals start forming. Put a lid over it until crystals stop forming. Put it in fridge until crystals stop forming. Finally, place it in the freezer.

Then, enjoy the fruits of your labor !
