Problem with a STB extraction

I'm doing a STB tek using about 600ml water, 100 g lye and 100 g MHRB in a 1000ml canning jar. When I get to putting the naphta in my sludge it's not turning any shade of yellow. In a previous extraction where this happen I did get a tiny bit of spice, but I'd rather get some help with this. I've done extractions doing this before and had great results.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong. Any Ideas?

Never base the ammount of spice you think you have on the color of your naphtha.

Yellow represents colors/dyes that are in the bark. Yellow was picked up by the solvent you are using.

Yellow isnt active, so dont focus on it.

Yellow is often an idicator, IME nothing more than that.

Dont let yellow distract you. Follow the same procedure that got you good results before.

That's the problem. I am following the same procedure that I did get good results from and now I'm not getting good results.

I've been leaving it in for 24 hours and mixing/swirling it once in awhile.

Swim recently completed Swims first STB, the first two pulls yeilded completely clear Naphtha, Swim let the first pull sit for 2-3 hours, the 2nd 5-7.

The third and fourth pulls started yeilding alot more yellow, these were the pulls Swim let sit for a long time, also swim shook the jars harder/more often. These pulls yeilded some pure crystals, but half the amount was a waxy mixture that was hard to break up for proper evaporation. (required 3 washes and still retained some yellow tint)



I believe icehouse is right, i read somewhere that some suspect the color that shows up in the later pulls is oils, fats, or possibly other alkaloids being broken down by the extended basification, while im not sure, i think that the white, flaky crystals that can be separated easily is cleaner than yellow wax because the naphtha will evaporate better. This may mean smaller yields though so everyone weighs their own options.

Also I read Nomans tek which calls for (15ml water to 1g MHRB/LYE). This would mean you use 1500ml water and would need a gallon jar, be more specific as well what have you done exactly to this point?

EDIT: if you havnt crystallized the clear jar yet go ahead and see what you got, you can always set the jar on a warm pan of water to redisolve the yield if its not good enough and i then would suggest evapping it down and adding it to another pull. Remember you need there to be very little Naphtha when you freeze, the molecules need to be condensed/close together in the jar.

twirlz, are you freeze-precipitating? Is your mimosa the same as from the one you already used before?

How much naphtha are you using per pull? Did you check the FAQ?

I kinda got this type of yield. Very small amounts adding up to 10 pulls. I don't understand. Some pulls were maybe about 50mg spice pulls and others 80mg and 10mg. (not in any real order) Didn't have a scale at the time, but now that I have a scale I can judge by weight of doses for the machine.
Oh and I sware there is still spice in my mix jar.

If you're doing freeze precipitation try evaporating some of the naphtha before putting it into the freezer. If you used a lot of naphtha it's most likely not saturated enough.

The only real difference is the MHRB and where I got it from. I am doing freeze precipitation and I'm using about 150ml of naptha. I have read the FAQ as well. I was throwing this out to the web to see if anyone else has some ideas as to what could be wrong or ideas to increase my yields.

The place that I got my first batch of MHRB isn't around anymore (i checked when I thought it could be the MHRB). I have a batch that is in the freezer now that sat in my mix for almost 48 hours. We'll see how that one goes.

This is the stb tek I have not sure if its the same as yours. If followed correctly you will yield .3 out of only 20 grams of mimosa.

DMT20.M EXTRACTION RECIPE

List of Ingredients & Apparatus >>>>>

Ingredients.....

1.Sodium Hydroxide i.e. Caustic Soda 
(minimum of 5g 4 extracting 20g of mimosa hostills root bark)
2.Naphtha (Ronsono / Newport / Swanl Lighter Fluid 4 Zippos)
3. Tap water 
4.Mimosa Hostills Root bark (20g minimum extraction)

Apparatus.....

1.568ml vinegar bottle (can be found @ any supermarket)
2.12inch Plastic Pipettes 
3.Dust Mask 
4.Eye goggles
5.Glass McCartney Jar (I use Plastic Pill Bottle)
6.Small Glass Baking dish 
7.Millie-litre Measuring Jug 
8.Filters (to carefully pour in your ingredients!)

(All these apparatus items can be found on e bay quite cheaply) 

1.Take your glass vinegar bottle and make sure it is washed thoroughly throughout. 

2.Now Measure 200ml of tap water in your measuring jug and pour this into your vinegar bottle.

3.Measure out 5g of Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda) and filter this into your vinegar bottle containing the de Ionised water. 1 teaspoon= equals 5 grams of roto brand drain opener 

(Note: It may get a little hot as the caustic soda and water mix! So once all of the caustic soda has been filtered into the vinegar bottle, give it a little swirl:) 

4.Now You have mixed the sodium hydroxide and de ionised water together, filter in approximately 20g of Mimosa Hostills Root Bark 40 ml= 20 grams

5.Give it a little shake (1 - 2min) 

6.Now store this solution in a dark, undisturbed part of your working area at room temperature overnight! (I use my bedroom cabinet and would store for 24hours)

7.Now Measure out 50ml of Naphtha with your measuring Jug and then continue to add this to your vinegar bottle using one of your small filters 

(DO NOT SHAKE YET! THIS WILL PERTENTIALLY RUIN YOUR DMT) 

8.Start running a water bath for your solution @ 60c 

(You may be limited to your resources! So SWIM used a sink with the hot water tap which was filled up to the top with the hottest water it could produce. This came out to around 45c – 51c which is satisfactory) 

9.Leave your solution in your water bath for around 30-40mins.

10.Now take your solution in your vinegar bottle and UN-crew the cap to release any pressure generated by the hot water bath.

11.Start shaking your solution for at least a minute. 

(This is what is called ''The DMT Shuffle'' it's important to shake vigorously but not like the world will end! Shaking 2 hard 4 2 long will result in emulsions!!!) 

12.Now create a new hot water bath (same procedure as step 8) 

13.Place your solution in the hot water bath! But for 4 hours now. Running a new water bath every 2hours. 

(This separates the naphtha containing the NN-DMT to the top of the solution where it is easy to python of the naphtha and proceed onto the next step)

14.Once the 4hours has passed, Take your vinegar bottle out of your water bath and UN crew the cap to release any pressure and let it cool down!

15.Now using your pipette filter out the top layer of naphtha and store in your plastic pill bottle.

16.Make Sure your Glass Baking is Well cleaned with hot water 

17.Pour your naphtha collected in your pill bottle into the Glass Baking Dish

18.Now Store for 24 hours in your freezer.

19.Take your glass dish and python off any remaining naphtha which did not freeze and now store this in your pill bottle for future extractions 

(Note: when doing a new extraction with new mimosa hostills root bark don't use old naphtha it is best to use new stuff to get maximum yield) 

Now your should be left with what looks like small golden yellowish crystals. At the bottom of your glass dish! 

20.Now leave this in a dark undisturbed place of your working area to dry for a couple of days with something to cover it on top.

(I use a vinyl to cover top so no oxygen gets to the crystals and melts them! This will happen if you leave your crystals to dry with no cover!) 

Extracting 100g of Mimosa Hostills Root Bark will get you around 0.9g of NN-DMT (through if you can perfect the tek you can 1.5g of NN-DMT)(0.3g out of 20g)

Well it seems that my last run was a fluke. My first pull freeze precip yield was just about what I got from 3 pulls on my last run.
