Hello I was wondering about whether or not to use an amonia wash after the crystals have been frozen. I have previously freezed the slovent, poured off naptha and let the crystals dry in pan then scrape up and put to use.( This seems to work fine as it has provided an effective product) I am a bit paranoid though and dont want to smoke any lye or other impurities is it nessecary to further purify?? Thanks for the help!

Vape point of lye is something ridic. high, higher than you will encounter trying to smoke :) Even [i:f45080df73]if[/i:f45080df73] you'd mechanically caught some up in there, there's no risk you'd be vaping it.Never done an ammonia wash, but I do tend to wash all my solvent fractions with sodium carbonate solution.Check your solvent half an hour after putting in freezer; if you've caught any basic layer in there it'll be freezing up and red at the bottom then.If so, you know to give it a wash,; saying that though, as it can't harm you it's more for aesthetic/perfectionist reasons than anything else.

Thank you very much fourthripley you have put my mind at ease. I have not ever noticed any red setiment at the bottom of the jars and the naptha looks clear as water so I think im safe.

My friend likes ammonia washes alot. Maybe you should try washing a portion of your product and then compare the smoothness of the smoke with that of the unwashed. To do this place your crystals in a coffee filter, pour over freezer chilled ammonia making sure it totally covers and wets all the crystals. Use as little ammonia to as you can my friend was given a ratio of 25ml ammonia to each gram of spice but my friend uses a little more than that with no serious problems. He never wieghs or meassures anything throughout the whole extraction proccess. You will see that the liquid that perculates through the crystals and filter paper has taken on some colour. This is probably residual plant tannins rather than lye that you can see as lye itself is colourless. The crystals are then thouroughly dried and then used as normal. I think you will find the product much smoother on the throat and lungs. There is one significant draw back to ammonia washing and that is a loss of maybe 10% of the product. This should be recouped by throwing the used ammonia back into your next base extraction. The smell of ammonia is also rather unpleasant but that is a trivial matter.

[quote:6a548bf526="crystalcompass"]I'd recommend either a recrystalization or a wash while the spice is still in the solvent over an ammonia wash.[/quote:6a548bf526] can you explain that last bit! swim intend to do a wash , but as far as swim read the ideal would be 100ml of cold ammonia for 1g,is there any other method?

I'm not saying that is the most reliable method, and no one I personally know uses it. I'd recommend a recrystallization...of course, from what I remember, noman was better versed on this subject.
