question about freeze precip

so SWIM started their first extraction last night, did 3 pulls and put into freezer (1/2 pt jar with lid on). he didnt try to evap first because it wasnt in noman's tek. this morning, there are snowflakes on the bottom of the jars (with little black specs of lye as well) but they're not making their way up the sides of the jars, instead just chilling out on the bottom. is this because his freezer isnt cold enough? or maybe he should have evap'd at room temp before freezing?

I find that if your solvent is saturated with dmt enough, you don't need to evap at all. Even then I wouldn't really bother evapping if you have a cold enough freezer. That said perhaps you don't have a cold enough freezer.. how long have you waited?

Also, those specks of black lye water will mess with you later. I strongly suggest you take the far from the freezer and slowly let it warm up. Then use a big of heat if necessary to warm it up enough to redissolve all the dmt that came out. Then pour the solvent off and carefully make sure you leave all the black crap behind. Then back in the freezer

its only been 24 hrs since he put the jars in the freezer and he's not in a hurry.. he told me that he heard it was good to leave the jars in for 3 days or more to pull the most spice from the solvent.. i'll let him know about the lye and im betting he'll take your advice. thanks

Pretty much anything thats going to drop out of the solvent will have, overnight.

Given how the freeze precip actually works, if you have too much solvent for the amount of dmt it will just stay in. If you think you have more dmt than what is precipitating then you need to evap some.

my friend told me that he took coschi's advice and was able to remove the lye water and the solvent is now completely clear. most of the lye water was caked onto the bottom of the jars, so removal was fairly easy. he said he then combined all the solvent into one (clean, brand new) jar and is now letting it slowly evap at room temp, just incase his freezer temp isnt cold enough.

he told me he wondered if it was possible that any of the spice remained in the bottom of the jar with the lye, but doesn't care enough to try to do anything with it.

very little if any would be left at the bottom

perhaps let your solvent evaporate down 1/3 -> 1/2 and then stick it in the freezer. I'm sure your freezer will be ok. For good measure you can place it in front of the fan

dont bother evaporating as one can use the used naptha over and over again why lose ne. give it 8 hours or so in the freezer... filter with fine fine cloth mesh and scrape jar, the left/filtered naptha is reusable

If you're worried your freezer isn't cold enough, you can fill a large glass jar with a bit of rubbing alcohol and water (about 50:50, but some experimentation might be needed) add a good tablespoon of salt, and if desired a few tablespoons of antifreeze.

This, in a good freezer, can get the contents of whatever you'd like to cool to a wicked -17c (if you're lucky enough).

This is also an easy way to make ice cream, just make sure you have a sealed container, as the coolant is very unhealthy (read: deadly) for you.

I would assume that this isn't the problem though. Perhaps you need to add more NaHO to your mix, or gently shake the mixture and let it settle for a good 5 hours or so... But I'm not entirely sure, I've never done this.

If you have too much solvent per amount of product, you arent going to get a good yield of crystals no matter how cold, or how long you chill the solvent. Your best course of action is to evaporate at room temp at least 1/2 the volume of solvent. If you start seeing crystals form during evaporation, stop, and put it in the freezer again. Another good thing to try is to take some kind of glass stirring rod, or some type of similar thing, and SCRAPE it rather annoyingly against the glass under the solvent or near the bottom of the solvent. This can help cause the crystals to form. Do it for about 5 minutes before giving up. Its a general method and you can try it whenever crystals arent forming.

I would think that crystals on the bottom of the jar would be easier to scrape up as it is.

I have a hell of a time scraping up the Salvinorin A crystals that form on the side of the jar...
