SAFE d-Limonene+calcium hydroxide Tek?

Migrated topic.

SWIM is getting odd results with muriatic acid... that is, it just doesn't seem to separate from the d-limonene.

Should SWIM just pour in some vinegar?

I believe that concentrated HCl reacts with some of the other compounds in the food grade d-limonene which is only 95% pure with 5% impurities which include other things extracted from lemons.
Limonene itself too will react with HCl. So like ron says, go with the vinegar. No need for muriatic.

SWIM has not had trouble with dilute HCl reacting with anything. 10% HCl or higher seems to react. SWIM needs more tests though to confirm that wasn't a fluke.

So will sodium carbonate work with this tek if Calcium Hydroxide is not readily available? (I'm in Nova Scotia... It really isn't readily available)

Edible lime is hard to find. Maybe you'll have an easier time finding 'kalkwasser.' I recommend 'seachem' brand. This product is much more pure than edible lime from an asian food market.

This is used to maintain calcium and alkalinity in marine aquarium systems. It is VERY pure. Most people won't use edible lime in aquaria because it has traces of nitrates and phosphates.

Try looking for "hydrated lime" or "pickling lime" in a Mexican grocery store in the spice section. Those are other names for calcium hydroxide and the kind they sell in the spice section is food grade.

...but can I use Sodium Carbonate? lmao. You guys are hilarious. Every question I've ever asked on this forum has gotten an answer to a question I didn't ask. I'm aware of the different names for lime... we don't have a mexican grocery store, nor an asian market besides little corner shops. I'll look into the aquarium thing... and I have lye... I'm just sketched about using it after discovering mercury is still used as a catalyst for the production of it.

So, again, Can I use Sodium Carbonate? Will Sodium Carbonate work with this d-limonene tek? Will sodium carbonate NOT work for some reason? Will it work for some other reason? Sodium Carbonate? Anyone? lol thanks!

Seriously, I don't mean to be rude, (I don't feel like I'm being rude :p )I just wanna know If anyone has tried it or has reason to believe it will or will not work.

THANKS! Sodium Carbonate.

CARBONATE!

This SWIM tried sodium carbonate for a Bufotenin extraction that failed. He then tried a similar extraction with Calcium hydroxide (for mescaline)and noticed the tell tail smell of ammonia of the reaction taking place that he didn't notice when using the sodium carbonate. That extraction was very successful. Apparently other people have had better luck. SWIM thinks he may have used too much water with his sodium carbonate attempt.

You can't get Calcium Hydroxide in Canada. It's banned :S

Really? I know some aquarists in Canada who use kalkwasser in their tanks.

Go to a good marine aquarium supply store. Or even a big pet store.

OR. . . Go to 'marine depot' or 'Drs. Foster and Smith' online. Order 500g kalkwasser (seachem) it'll only be about 15USD. It is pure, finely gransulated CaOH. It is not watched. People who grow stony corals use TONS of it every week, some of these people I know are in Canada.

Is it possible that reagent grade CaOH is banned but products containing 100% CaOH (such as kalkwasser mix) are available.

Could one use FASA to precipitate and then wash and re-use d-limonene as with xylene?

That would rule!

Then rebase if needed and wash with d-limonene (just to taste ;)).

SWIM is a little bit confused with the first step for getting freebase DMT.

Could someone clarify what this means:

add about 2 parts calcium hydroxide

Add 2 parts? How much is 2 parts?

For the sake of theoretical discussion:
- What reasons do people have for using either calcium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (given the choice between the 2)?
- Is either more advantageous, or more appropriate in combination with certain acids and solvents?
- If sodium carbonate was used in this method, how would the ratios change for steps 1 and 8?

Thanks, very interesting discussion here.

I'll answer my own question:

Sodium carbonate has a solubility of 22 g/100 mL of water.
Calcium hydroxide has a solubility of 0.19 g/100 mL of water.

Therefore it holds that sodium carbonate is more suited for wet teks, and calcium hydroxide is more suited for dry teks (where legal, for the sake of theoretical discussion).

SWIM is nearly ready to give this tek a go. I posted once previously asking this question, but it went unanswered.

(again, i realize i just posted this. I'm only asking again because SWIM told me that's the only thing stopping him from trying this tek)

Twice of much calcium hydroxide as DMT.

Hello all,

Swim is the first person to ever use limonene to extract DMT. I posted his original tek on this forum, it's called "NON-TOXIC LIMONENE TEK"

I put it in all caps cuz I was so excited about it.

Glad to see there's an interest in it.

The old write-up is actually pretty sloppy, considering what Swim knows now. He's been working with limonene for years, and hasn't touched that petroleum crap ever since. He swears by limonene.

To answer all questions:

Quality:
The quality is amazing. Swim will never smoke petroleum-extracted spice again. There's a darker "edge" to it that, with limonene spice, is replaced by a smoother, natural, organic feel.

Sodium carbonate:
Will work just fine. However it's no good for STB (straight to base) which Swim feels gives better yeild. Calcium hydroxide should work for STB.

How to get freebase:
Swim would not recommend ron's method, though apparently it works.
What Swim does is get dmt acetate (any other salt should be fine as well), then redissolve it in a little HOT distilled water.
Then, in an eyedropper bottle, he has the bottle roughly 1/3 of the way filled with this redissolved acetic salt solution... he adds another 1/3 warm saturated sodium carbonate solution. Then he fills the eyedropper bottle the rest of the way up with isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol). He agitates and the layers separate, iso on top. Using the eyedropper he removes the iso layer which contains the freebase alkaloids, then adds more iso and repeats two more times (3x total iso pulls) then combines iso pulls and evaps. There's still a little sodium carbonate residue cuz it's an incomplete separation, but there's much less that there would be if he just evapped the aqueous layer.

Then he uses anhydrous iso to redissolve the alkaloid goo, using a spoon to crush up the insoluble sodium carbonate residue and liberate any molecules trapped in it. He does this 3-4x, filtering to remove sodium carbonate residue, then evaps the iso onto a small amt. of leaf.

He likes this because 1: it's inconscpicuous, and 2: it's easier to handle, and 3: you may get goo using this method. But seriously enhanced leaf is way better than xtls.

He gets usually 6-9g total alkaloids from a pound of bark powder, and uses 2.3g powdered red poppy flower, but any herb will do (weights may very tho).

you say sodium carbonate is not good for stb... are you talking about dry or wet. i can understand how it would be bad to use in a wet tek, but will a drytek sodium carbonate stb work? that poor canadian dude never had his question answered :(

My buddy just followed this tek to a TEE and only got 400 mg of acetate from 51 grams of bark that yields 1.2% freebase with a STB. I'm assuming (logically) that when freebased, this is going to decrease in weight substantially. Any ideas on where I could've gone wrong?
