Sen. Jim Webb introduces bill to keep drug users out of jail.

Migrated topic.
The younger generation believes in freedom. If you're not harming anyone by your actions then there should not be laws prohibiting them. I call these “lifestyle laws”. They are stupid.

The USA has many “lifestyle laws” on the books that really make no sense at all and don’t actually prevent people form living those lifestyles. For example, the hippie lifestyle is banned: you cannot smoke pot, you cannot use LSD, you cannot be nude (unless in certain locations).

And then you have sexual “lifestyle laws” which outlaw certain types of sexual relationships: an 18 year old and a person 1 day younger than 18 cannot legally have sex; in some states certain forms of sex are banned; a woman and a woman cannot get married, etc. These laws do not prevent homosexuality, nor do they prevent them from forming their own “marriage” to each other. Many teenagers, especially girls have sex with guys several years older who are often over 18. This is commonplace and has been that way for thousands of years. Many girls prefer older guys.

“Sexting” is illegal for teenagers. This is way overboard. A teenager can be put in prison for many years because she sent a nude pic of herself to her boyfriend, which legally constitutes “child pornography”, which it obviously is not.

Having your own psychedelic religious ceremony is also illegal. The Native Americans have been using psychedelic plants for centuries for religious purposes and enlightenment. It’s not the government’s business if you chose to be a shaman. They have no right to stop you. We are supposed to have religious freedom in the USA. Why don’t we? What’s up with that? If that’s the lifestyle you chose, it’s none of the government’s business.

I don’t understand why we put up with such stupidity. Your lifestyle is none of the governments business. If you are not harming anyone, the government has absolutely no right to interfere with your life. If you are steeling, harming others emotionally, harmine others physically, etc., that’s when the government needs to step in. But if you’re taking LSD at a rock concert and having a ball, it’s none of the government’s business. What you or other people decide to do together that doesn’t harm anyone is your business, no one else’s.

I hope to see an end to all “lifestyle laws” giving people true freedom of religion and the pursuit of happiness.

Well put ron. I have always felt that if your pursuit of happiness does not interfere with my pursuit of happiness than you should be free to persue. I hope we see it in our lifetime. So many people are misinformed and have no interest in being informed. But I feel it will eventual move towards freedom it seems to be the direction.

The drug war is one of the worst atrocities of our century (shadowed only by genocide), however marriage laws are also ridiculous. Who cares, if you are homo-phobic then you likely have some sexual issues yourself. Honestly who cares.

These organized "religious" theologies have seriously infected our culture. Faith is a process of supressing logic. One should always question everything. But organized religion is luckily declining while personal spirituality seems to be growing. We must acknowledge that we do not know and this is ok. One can still know right from wrong with out organized religion (after all it was man who made religion).

In the words of the buddha " Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; nor upon tradition; nor upon rumor; nor upon scripture;... Only when you yourself know these things are good... these things lead to benefit and happiness, should you abide in them."
