My friend has found Lye at a local hardware store, but I'm checking for him to make sure this is exactly what he needs for an extraction. Here is some data from the MSDS:

Chemical Name & Synonyms – Sodium Hydroxide, CAS No. 1310-73-2
Trade Name & Synonyms – Caustic Soda 100%
Chemical Family – Alkali
Formula – NaOH
DOT Shipping Name – Caustic Soda
DOT Hazard Class – Corrosive Material
Reportable Quantity – 1000 lbs. / 454 kg.
ID Number – UN1823 Sodium Hydroxide Solid
Subsidiary Risk – N/A
Section 2 – HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS / IDENTITY INFORMATION
Hazardous Components (Specific Chemical Identity; Common Name(s)):
Sodium Hydroxide 100%
Section 3

Thanks for the help!

Peace

Oh, Haha! That number's just off the MSDS. I think it means that if someone orders / purchases 1000lbs or more, then it has to be reported to the feds. No way will SWIM need that much!

Going by Lazyman's tek and 0.5% content, thats enough for just under 6kg of freebase  It'll have to be a pretty enormous freezer =/

Going by an A/B tek that would last you a couple of lifetimes.

(again shamelessly promoting A/B over STB)

How about making wood ash lye? It's easy. Pour some boiling water on some wood ash and you get a solution of potassium carbonate which can have a pH of up to 12.
