Starting Confusion

I just began my journey with DMT a few weeks ago, for a variety of personal reasons that intrigue me from many podcast discussions. I had never vaped or smoked in my life, so at the beginning I really had terrible technique. I honestly think I burnt and degraded my product early on playing around, and in the end caused me a week of really struggling to get deep into a trip. After refining my technique a bit, I really started to have more intense experiences. My journey so far:

-First 5-8 sessions (doing 3 puffs) with eyes covered: brilliant colors/shapes/movement/geometric patterns, but all 2D. Effects lasted at most 3-5 minutes

After refining my breathing/inhale/hold/exhale technique:
-Next couple sessions: The colors/shapes were much more intense with eyes closed, and i opened my eyes and the room turned into what I could best describe as a cartoon world, the prominent furniture became very smooth/cartoon like, moved in towards me dancing with music, all the other small details disappeared, the entire room had perfect edges and colors. Was extremely beautiful and emotional.
-On my second attempt I took a couple more hits and closed my eyes, and feel like I finally fully surrendered, and then I had my first experience of a 3D environment with my eyes closed. A giant ominous black/gray room, with best to be described as large metal beams in between me and it, I felt like I could not enter but wanted to.

At this point the oil in the cartridge had become thicker and darker. So I replaced it. The next hit was wild:

-I could barely make the third pull, fell back with my eyes closed. I almost instantly came into a 3D world where a large worm (like in the movie Dune), was traveling through an environment quickly in front of me, snaking its way around. There was the fine detail geometric shapes everywhere with brilliant colors, including what made up the worm. Now here is the wild thing I know there was more but I cant fully remember all that occurred either. I never experienced warping through hyper space that I could tell, until i started to come down from the worm experience. I had opened my eyes into the cartoon world again, but then on closing them I was then in like a worm-hole type area in space where it reminding me of entering warp speed.

I was always expecting to go through some sort of that space warp type thing, a waiting room (not sure what I was expected), and make my way to a "breakthrough" with entities I heard people talk about. A few questions:

-What do people classify that cartoon world with your eyes open (which is wild and so beautiful)
-Was my experience with a dark 3D room and the beams likely what people would call a waiting room?
-Was my dune style worm type experience, classified as an experience with an entity? Is that a break-through? I did not speak or try and communicate.

I am just curious on what the definition of a "breakthrough" actually means. Should I still up the dose more or keep having experiences where I am at currently.

If there is a guide or video that discusses all these types of experiences, I would love to have a link!

To answer your first question: sometimes people call it LEGO land or Minecraft world. Textures get smoothed over or removed. Surfaces can look matte and shapes may appear simply altered, sometimes more or less angular than during the sober state. I personally find the open-eyed visuals accompanying a strong DMT dose to be incredibly unique and fun to observe.

Your second two questions are more subjective and I wouldn't recommend focusing on defining those spaces, unless you want to for your own journaling purposes. There is no strong consensus on what the waiting room or a breakthrough really is. I know I provided some terms for your first question that may go a short way in the direction of defining the open-eyed experience. However they are also merely words that don't do justice to the experience. I wouldn't recommend focusing on trying to define that aspect of the trip, either. The explanations and descriptions simply aren't very transferrable unless you meet someone who has lived through a very similar trip. A common word to describe DMT is ineffable and I would agree that it is the word that does the experience the most justice.

Oh, and by the way, welcome 🙃

Thank you for your guidance. Yes so far the open eyed world where my furniture actually moved towards me and began moving to the music was totally wild and beautiful. I definitely was hoping for a few reasons though to experience interactions with entities, so my questions more come from is it likely I am going deep enough yet for that kind of experience. I do not see people talking about entities with their eyes open, or can that happen as well?

I cannot speak for others, but I believe from lots of reading that entity contact generally happens when one's eyes are closed, or if they have taken so much that they cannot tell if their eyes are closed or open. When I have experienced "entity contact" it always occurs when my eyes are closed.

If you continue to explore with DMT, trying your best to surrender typically leads to deeper experiences. Meditation and intentional preparation of setting are helpful aids. That is as much specificity as I feel comfortable with supplying in the way of how to go deep.

Hi @explorer66 welcome to the Nexus.

When I started on this journey, I was heavily influenced by, and chasing, those elements of the DMT experience that have seeped into the wider consciousness: machine elves, meeting aliens, waiting rooms, 'breakthroughs' and all that.

I would recommend not getting too hung up on all that. Terms like 'breakthrough' are fairly nebulous and certainly subjective.

There's nothing wrong with exploring any of that, but in my experience so far, it is a rather reductive way of looking at the DMT experience. Appreciating low to moderate doses, especially with eyes closed or a blindfold, makes for less dramatic trip reports but is genuinely beautiful and uplifting. For me, at least. To the extent that this has become the focus of my investigations. I'm now less interested in the fabled entities than enjoying some beautiful, shifting patterns. For now at least.

Let us know how you get on, and please share your experiences.

Thank you @Pemulis for the insight. I definitely want to step back a bit I think after the below:

I had my second wild trip yesterday. It was chaotic to say the least, eyes closed the soft music I was playing changed to the carnival style music, and I just was blasted with chaotic 3d images, colors etc and really struggled to put anything together, not sure if this is common. I got a sense that it was telling me I wasn’t ready in away or it was to much for me to be able to assemble into a steady vision. Curious if others have similar experiences, and that carnival type music I can’t tell if it’s playful or almost mocking. And if so what you do/advice. I am thinking about practicing and meditating more.

These fully immersive visual scenes are not as common as people would like you to believe. We usually post a report about an experience that struck us somehow. Chaotic and unpredictable trips are much more common, especially in the beginning. It takes time to get accustomed to the state and work with it. I would not put any judgment on what you experience. It is what it is.

See what you feel in the body, which emotions come up, and enjoy the visual component for what it is. Just read about mindfulness practice like vipassana. It is a good way to relate to it all. The mind is not to be trusted, and when it comes to such strong medicine, one needs to be extra vigilant. All these ideas about being ready or not are just thoughts. It is better to watch who is tripping instead.

Yes, music brings on a strong influence and should be chosen accordingly beforehand. We have a few threads here just about that. Choose what works for you and explore. Further, do not forget to ground yourself in everyday life between your journeys.

Thank you! What I find wild is the music chosen got totally replaced with the carnival music, they weren’t even remotely similar.
Welcome to the party. I've seen music change so many times that I've stopped questioning it. Once, one song kept playing no matter what I did.
I deleted it from my phone in the end to get a break. How much of it is your perception under the influence and how much is real remains a question.

Yea ineffable checks out. I walked the line a bunch of times up until tonight. Smoked one bowl and didn’t get there, decided to go again. Didn’t make it half way. Dropped the bowl in between my legs, clasped my hands behind my head. Was super confused about the weird weight on my back (back touching the couch). Upon re-entering myself and reality I yelled “What the fuck!” The 3-4/6 level on the 6 scale is so weird for me. It’s always this interweaving pulsating geometry. Alien or plant like. Surprisingly consistent. Like reality melting into geometry. But it’s like also a language and communication of sorts. “Welcome! To ride this ride, please use your hands you can’t feel and your face you can’t see to smoke some more 😉. 10/10.
