SWIM almost burned his face off!

I decided to create a separate topic from the previous one(Problem with the 'THP'), because I think what happened to SWIM deserves some attention.

SWIM was doing the last steps in "Jorkest's D-Limonene Bufotenine Extraction", where you purify the Bufotenine with boiling Limonene, when a bursting flame came out of the little pot he was holding on to! Luckily he only got a minor degree burn on his right hand, but it could have been much worst.

SWIM knows that it's his fault and he is not going to blame anyone. He was using hazardous chemicals and he should have done more research beforehand. But he thinks that there are lots of careless people like him around that could do the same mistake, so he was wondering if Jorkest or any other 'approved' member could add a warning in that extraction tek.

SWIM always saw Limonene as a friendly and harmless chemical, that's why he didn't even worry for a second when he started working on the stove. From now on he will be much more carefull:lol:

P.S. All the sweet Bufotenine that SWIM was working on burned down with the Limonene, so he would like to have a minute of silence for this tragedy.....

NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER heat solvents on the stove.

Next time make a pot of boiling water, put it in the sink (far away from any open flame) and heat your solvent jar in the water. This will avoid any possible face burning (not to mention house and neighbor burning).

SWIM knows that heating solvent is dangerous, but somehow his contorted mind saw Limonene as something holly and harmless.

So, how would you make it boil then?

You may not be able to. But given the choice between heating your solvent that last few degrees and risking burning your face off (along with all of your neighbors' faces...), ALWAYS opt for safety.

I totally agree with you, although I find it weird that SWIM was the first one to have encountered this problem...

And this is why you RESEARCH before you start doing things. Never do an extraction on an open flame, I think almost every single TEK mentions this and otherwise basic chemistry from high school should've reminded you. What made you think d-limo wasn't flammable? Because it's made from citrus fruits? Always use indirect heating OR a hot plate. I use a indirect heating AND a hotplate. Ie, I boil water on my hot plate, turn it off, move the pan with boiling water to the cold element and then dip whatever I'm heating into it.

Use a heating mantle and a thermal controller that uses electronic relays. These have NO contacts that cause sparks. You should have incredibly good ventilation that pulls any fumes generated out of the area you are working in. Even if you use indirect heating with water as mentioned before, you must be exceedingly careful to not allow the accumulation of any solvent vapor. This can ignite by turning on a light switch or triggering any source of a spark. In the olden days buzzers and bells had contacts that generate sparks too....

SWIM thought he did his research, he has been reading about the subject for a long while. Although in SWIM's terrestrian country of origin they do not teach any applied chemistry, so his knowledge before discovering the Nexus was pretty limited. SWIM was quite surprised when he red the boiling bit, but naively he just followed the procedure without wondering if there was any danger involved. I know it's quite a noob thing to do, but "errare est humanum".

SWIM believes that a warning would be very helpful for any unexperienced spirit, cause in his eyes it's not very clear how dangerous it's that step.

Yeah, Limonene may be distilled from fruit, but it is an incredibly potent solvent and extremely flammable.

By the way, yesterday I smoked some toasted and then grounded seeds and I loved it. Not enough to get any visuals, but it was extremely gentle and calming. No nausea was involved.

A friend says he had to heat solvent once and just placed it in a metal bowl and used an electric kettle (on the FAR side of the room!) to boil water and add it to a glass bowl underneath the metal one. The metal conducts heat very well and this way he didn't have any heat or sparks near his solvent.

Yeah thats not a good thing but i have to have a little tee-hee about that and basic chemistry because i though everyone when they were younger and smoking out peeled an orange by a butain lighter and watched the the little sparks of juice flame out:d
