It is a common question that people ask, if a certain chemical is OK to use for extraction or not, and also where to find such and such chemical. Instead of cluttering up the forum with hundreds of threads about it, those who have these question can post here (and threads made with such questions will be merged here).

That a hoot benz! Potassium cyanide as food safe... yeah!

But actually our 'friends' at the FDA allow drugs like coumadin to be widely taken as a blood thinner. It should be a crime (assault or murder) for doctors and the pharmaceutical companies to sell (warfarin) rat poison to their customers. There are far less toxic alternatives that are effective such as nattokinase... but I digress.

Hello!

I already completed an extraction successfuly but spent shitloads of money with a chemical vendor.
Got cheaper alternatives now, but which nps should I choose?
I got to choose between

Petroleum ether (naphtha) 30 - 75°C - 15€/liter
White spirit (parrafinic and naphthalenic hydrocarbons C5-C7) 60/95 - 5,30€/liter
White spirit 100 - 140°C - 3,9€/liter
Shellsol® T - 4,4€/liter
Shellsol® D 70 - 7€/l
Shellsol® D 40 (free of aromates, 160 - 195°C) - 7€/l
Sangajol (mix of parrafinic, aromatic and naphthalenic hydrocarbons C9-C12) - 4,7€/lite
Shellsol® A (hydrocarbons C9-C10) - 4,65€/liter

I am searching for the best cost-performance ratio.

What about this? Waschbenzin (for dry cleaning) (mixture of hydrocarbons C7-C8). I guess this would evaporate clean, as it is made for cleaning clothes.

There is a lot of confusion concerning chemical nomenclature, especially in the petrochemical sector. Just like metric and US measurement system :D

If I search for "Waschbenzin" in the german Wikipedia, I get redirected to "Testbenzin". When I choose the english page I get: White spirit - Wikipedia

For some reason the thought of naptha grosses me out. I am looking for substitutes and thought of using some left over superfuel from my msr stove. I think it is suposed to be distilled super clean white gas. It evaporates in seconds when spilt and leaves no smell and no residue. And when I pour some on a wet camp fire and then light it, it produces a tower of flames taller than me, although I guess you could argue that that is beside the point.

Anyhoo I was wondering if anybody had tried this as a non polar solvent. If I should use the same amount as if using naptha. Or should I just get some acetone if I'm worried about residues?

I hadnt noticed but you did not name your solvent in the post, only the thread title, and since I moved your thread here, which is the appropriate place, it has lost the thread title. So you're gonna have to name it again (and check the first post of this thread to see if it helps)

Thanks endless, it's called "super fuel" produced by a company called mountain safety research
I believe it is a distilled form of white gas and my question is if anyone has ever used something like this and if one should change the amount used based on speed of evaporation?

BIG ORANGE cleaning liquid....is anyone familiar with it?

A bulk-buy/wholesale grocery-type warehouse store nearby sells this stuff for something like ~$18 per 2 gallon jug...a quick check of the msds (available **here**) shows that the cleaning liquid is comprised of the following (by weight):

d-Limonene --- >90%

Nonyphenoxylpoly(Ethyleneoxy)Ethanol --- 1-5%

Nonyphenoxyl Poly(Ethyleneoxy) Ethanol --- 1-5%

(note: the above is not a typo, this is how the composition was listed on the actual msds, unsure of why the sufactants are listed twice)


It sure would be great to not have to order d-limonene at ridiculous prices+s&h and just be able to buy it in bulk at a local grocer...anyone know if this stuff would be an ok source for d-limonene?

If not (hypothetical question--more for the benefit of those smarter and better equipped than I), could this be a cheap enough source to consider for just distilling the pure d-limo out of it and getting ~1.8gallons/$18?

Very few options in Canada for Naptha, and Escort is the cleanest one I have found. I am a firm believer in freeze precipping (as opposed to evapping), which eliminates a lot of the worry about impurities. The only time I evap is when making changa with acetone.
