The official "Is this chem ok to use? / Where can I find ...?" thread

Migrated topic.
It is a common question that people ask, if a certain chemical is OK to use for extraction or not, and also where to find such and such chemical. Instead of cluttering up the forum with hundreds of threads about it, those who have these question can post here (and threads made with such questions will be merged here).

But before asking such questions, here's a few important links you should THOROUGHLY read:

Hello!

I want to start making DMT again but I could only find pure d-limonene in one store and they don't have it right now. I found something called DL-90, made of d-limonene and nonionic surfactants (and also DL-40 but I imagine it's more impure). Can I use this?

Do NOT use this. The surfactants may be non toxic but you do not want them in your DMT.
They were not intended to be smoked & are potentially toxic when ingested via this route.

Limonene is easy to find online.
The best option imo is a factory that produces limonene as an all purpose cleaner in Florida. It comes in glass bottles & has different purities ranging from 95-98.5%(the 98.5% being minimum purity for the higher purity stuff).

Shipping makes it rather expensive, but it is well worth it.

No surfactants or additives.

I see...I'm kind of far from Florida, in Brazil, so shipping would be very expensive (not to mention a lot of work). I've already sent an email to the store I bought the first time so now all I can do is wait, I have searched everywhere online for stores that sell it here but it seems quite difficult to find.
Thanks for the answer!

It's even harder! At first I was looking for naphta but could never find it, then I tried benzine once, but I felt it made my dmt weird. I think limonene may be the easiest, actually! I found an orange juice factory near my town that seems to sell the stuff, but I'm not sure I can buy limonene and not be a chemist...are there restrictions?

It looks to me like it might be light naphtha (what you're looking for) but I don't want to give you a definitive yes because the sheet isn't super specific. It just says hydrocarbons. Can we get someone else to chime in here?

What's the solubility of sodium nitrate in naphthalene like?
Naphthalene is used in moth balls, you don't want to use it for extracting dmt with. What you mean to say, I guess, is naphtha.

Sodium nitrate is very insoluble in naphtha and naphthalene. However, don't ever mix flammable substances with any nitrates. You could potentially be creating a bomb.

If the reason that you are asking this is that you are looking at drain cleaner that contains sodium nitrate, sodium hydroxide and aluminium flakes, then the advice is to not use this product for dmt extractions. Only ever use pure sodium hydroxide, with no additives.

If you find pure soodium hydroxide hard to source, consider getting potassium hydroxide instead. It is sold for the purpose of manufacturing biodiesel and has less "cookery" stigma attached. Potassium hydroxide functions the same way as sodium hydroxide in extraction teks.

Is this safe to use? Only base I have Amazon.com

I am unsure if anyone uses pH up, but if you are going through amazon, you can just get Lye, sodium bicarbonate(baking soda which can be converted to sodium carbonate via the oven), or Mrs Wages Pickling lime.

All available on amazon!

:)

I ordered lye but it got lost in the mail i've been waiting for weeks now, I found this ph up and just wanted to do an extraction while I'm waiting.

So is it safe to use it?

I would get the MSDS and see what is in it first. Also check out this thread:

can i just use ph up (hydroponics store) insted of lye ?

and this thread:

Potassium Hydroxide with STB tek

It all depends on what is in your particular brand of pH up. get the MSDS. If it is potassium hydroxide, it should work to get your pH right. You should never use a chemical without checking the MSDS. Just a general rule of thumb...

I went and bought baking soda, put it in the oven at 400 left in there an hour stirring it every once in a while. It did not reduce in size at all like it was supposed to. Am I missing some step? It sucks because I've been wanting to do an extraction forever but I'll be waiting on the lye for a while I"m sure.

I would just leave it in the oven for a bit longer. It will convert but it is kind of a subtle change unless you know what to look for. It looks more crystalline and loses some weight after releasing water and CO2. There is a picture in the WIKI:

Conversion of Sodium Bicarbonate into Sodium Carbonate

I don't know where you are located in this world but you can usually find lye in Lowes or Home Depot or other large/small hardware stores. Also Mrs Wages Pickling Lime and canning salt (pure salt) can be found in the canning section of Wal-Mart.

There's no need to use an oven. I've heated baking soda in a stainless steel frying pan; it sort of levitates while decomposing. Stirred it around with a stainless steel implement a bit and heated for a little while longer after it stopped levitating. It's not at all difficult to decompose (105 C). I heat it a bit longer as it can form a sesquicarbonate - i.e. it only half decomposes.
