The official "Is this chem ok to use? / Where can I find ...?" thread

Migrated topic.
It is a common question that people ask, if a certain chemical is OK to use for extraction or not, and also where to find such and such chemical. Instead of cluttering up the forum with hundreds of threads about it, those who have these question can post here (and threads made with such questions will be merged here).

But before asking such questions, here's a few important links you should THOROUGHLY read:

froggy,

Believe it or not but there is a button at the right side of every post you make that states 'EDIT'. With that button you can edit your post so instead of making four posts you could have put it in just one making it much more easy to read a thread.

Keep the nexus clean. :D

T|hen to the product you found, that is NOT an MSDS, it's just a product data sheet. On the sheet you can read this line: "Refer to the MSDS for additional information". So I guess your next step would be to find the MSDS for this product.

Kind regards,

ok so the cleaner i got has soap in it :[

So never mind what i wrote.

But where i work I did find some muriatic acid made by sunnyside corp, but i cant tell whether its pure or not either!

What happens if you acid cook with something that has other things than just the acid in it?

Hi guys,
In a few threads one can read "d-limonene (orange oil)...", does that mean one can use eather one as a solvent for an MHRB extraction (Tek 1: The Jimjam party for example...)?

SWIM would like to make sure as he got some orange oil and the guy from the store said it was quite the same than d-limo and it even smells better!... SWIM is really happy about this point, if it can't work as a solvent for the tek he will be able to desodorise his home...:p

Thanks

Two sides to the question: First of all, you cant use limonene like IPA because IPA evaps cleanly, while limonene doesnt.

But even if it would evap clean, to know if you can use it, you would have to know what is in bluelotus that you want (is it any alkaloid in specific, or what is it?), and then you would have to see if this alkaloid is soluble in it. If it is an alkaloid that is soluble in limonene, maybe you could do a work around which would be to salt out the limonene and convert again to freebase using sodium carbonate. But for all of this one would have to know the solubility of whatever you want in bluelotus. Or, just experiment and bioassay. With things that can have potentially dangerous alkaloids, one needs to be very prudent making bioassays, I have no idea about blue lotus and if whatever is contains can be dangerous in high doses. Please research well ;)

Ok, what I am going to do is actually 10x blue lotus and I couldn't really find any teks for it, but with the search I found some people that just put it in some Ipa and vaporized it into a smaller amount of lotus. But if limonene leaves junk behind then i'll just use Ipa.
Are there any teks on the wiki for concentrating different herbs? I can't find any.

Yes you can use it but you wouldnt really need neither demineralized nor distilled water. There is no evidence that they are any better than plain tap water for your typical extractions. Personally i've used both distilled and tap water and noticed no difference.

Ok,thanks!

I got another question. I bought hexane because Naphta was harder to find here in Spain.

The point is that I made an evaporation proof and it seems to left a tiny residue behind. Could it be toxic? At the label puti n-hexane, but it didn't specified the purity.

yup the residue could be toxic.recrystallize it with better solvent
SWIM has a problem..he did STB and pulled with eptane+dichloropropane mix couse he coulnd't find naphta in his country. He put solution in the freezer overnight but nothing came out from solution..it's strange couse other time when i used stain remoover that was dichloropropane+esane it worked good and the slightly yellow solution did some nice snow globes very fast
maybe i just need to concentrate it? maybe dmt is very soluble in dichloropropane and it migrates from eptane into DCP
help me please i just wasted dmt of 200g of bark, now i extracted 150g
anyway i think there's dmt into the solvent couse it's pale yellow, and when dry it smells somewhat of bark and leave my finger slightly bitter

I could use some help here confirming whether or not this product contains 100% lye or not.

I went to my local Ace Hardware and picked up Insta-Flo Odorless Drain Cleaner.

I've looked up the schematics of it's composition but it twas quite confusing to try and read through

Here's what I've read: http://insta-flo.com/msds.pdf

Can anyone make sense of this and tell me if it's safe to use this product for extraction?

Thanks for your time!

This is definitely useable. The MSDS says that it is 99% caustic soda aka NAOH aka lye. There are of course always going to be impurities in the chemicals we use, but for extraction purposes, this will do as long as you follow proper procedure.
