The official "Is this chem ok to use? / Where can I find ...?" thread

Migrated topic.
It is a common question that people ask, if a certain chemical is OK to use for extraction or not, and also where to find such and such chemical. Instead of cluttering up the forum with hundreds of threads about it, those who have these question can post here (and threads made with such questions will be merged here).

But before asking such questions, here's a few important links you should THOROUGHLY read:

Hi, is this product suitable to use as base/alkali for q21q21's tek?
label says it contains: Min: 90% Ca(OH)2, Max: 5% CaCO3, 1% Mg(OH)2, 1.2% MgCO3

Thank you.Peace.

I decided to wait and see if anyone would chime in before I replied to this but seeing as no one has...

I would try to find something else. I don't know if there would be any issues if you used that or not since my chemistry background is fairly limited. That contains magnesium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, and calcium carbonate.

What you want is just calcium hydroxide (CaOh2). This can be found known as pickling lime in grocery stores where they keep other pickling stuff.

It is very hard to obtain very pure Ca(OH)2 as it easily absorbs atmospheric CO2 and turns into CaCO3. The CaCO3 doesn't hinder extraction very much and max 5% is not too bad. Most mineral sources of lime also contain magnesium, 2% total Mg is not so bad and it doesn't hinder the extraction much. In any case, magnesium is not toxic.

I would use the product.

I bought 1-Heptanol instead of Heptane which is C7H16O instead of C7H16. Will this work for a recrystallization or have I bought the wrong solvent?
These are really different types of solvent. If the heptanol has a large enough difference in DMT solubility between hot and cold, it might work for recrystallizations. You could experiment a little if you like to. If it doesn't work, just evaporate off the heptanol and you have the DMT (and impurities) back.

IMHO you don't need fancy and expensive solvents like lab grade heptane. Light napha that evaporates cleanly is good enough.

do you guys think NaNO3 could be used as a replacement for NaCl? obviously NaCl is easier to find, but my lye has some NaNO3 and sodium carb in it, so i'm thinking that the NaNO3 could just replace the NaCl needed....

Hi!
I have come into possession of some Kodak NaOH of uncertain age. Here's the MSDS:

Is this safe to use? Neither the label nor the MSDS says anything about purity. If it is safe to use, does it have a shelf life? This is from a now-defunct dark room. It's half empty and the contents have caked up. I haven't opened it yet but I assume I can use a tool of some kind to break it up.

Thanks!

iamdave, As long as its kept away from moisture NaOH should be good for a very long time. It looks pretty pure too. 95%+ if i were to guess.

BringsUsTogether, you should add salt anyway. Though NaNO3 might add a little ionic strength to your solution, youre better off just using salt anyway.

Is anyone familiar with this product and the purity?

I have requested the MSDS from the seller but haven't heard back yet.
Thanks

NaOH (sodium hydroxide) is a very common chemical ranging from hydroponics, to dish soap, to drain cleaner, to a common lab chemical. There is already a wealth of information out there for it.

Just check its 98% + sodium hydroxide only and you will be good to go, good practice is to user a separate jug to make the basic water so any impurities drop out before adding to bark/phyllode mix.

Not sure why I can't create a new topic in the FAQ section so I'm just posting it here.

I know from searching that many on the nexus have used ronsonol lighter fluid without problems.

I have been doing only Eco teks myself, but i've been curious to see exactly what sort of yield i am getting and can't really do that because I don't end up with crystal. So I got some ronsonol and did an evap test on a petri dish. Once the fluid evaps it leaves some small stains on the glass, the same thing happens when i evap pure acetone though. So I am wondering whether these stains are indicative of impurities in the solvent or something else.

attached is a close up of the evap test.

Hi guys,

my cat is having trouble not only to find proper solvent but also to read a msds

Could anyone tell him if this would suitable as naphta replacement (q21q21's tek) ?

I guess someone who is used to read this kind of sheet won't be too bothered by the language 😁

Cheers

Ive been using crown vm & p naphtha & could not find an msds that was newer than 2008 until today.

Last updated msds was in 2012. It says 95-100% light aliphatic naphtha, nothing about rust inhibitors, evaporates clean & has been working well. Ive read a handful of times that crown has been used with no problems but on the newer msds down towards the bottom it has a section titled SARA title III ingredients & lists the following:
1,2,4-trimethylpentane weight: 1-5%
Xylenes, weight: 0-1%
Ethylbenzene, weight: 0-0.1%
Benzene, weight: 0-0.005%

I havnt tested the spice extracted with it yet. Is it safe to smoke? Is there any way any of these could end up in my end product?
