tuber gibbosum, The Oregon White Truffle

January is that time of year when Mrs Ice House and I head out into the woods with our dogs and go truffle hunting.

we have been doing this now for about 4 years. It's really hit or miss until you learn a bit about habitat.

The variety of truffle we are hunting for is called tuber gibbosum aka, the Oregon White Truffle. These are not psychoactive. They are however delicious when prepared in a nice pasta where olive oil is the base for your sauce. They can also be added to butter to make truffle butter or infused into oil or prepared a number of other ways.

one thing to note about these truffels is that the delicious aroma is fat soluable so it is important to prepare them in a dish that contains oil or butter.

The aroma and taste is absolutely devine! They are very pungent. The odor/taste is a cross between an old sharp farmers cheese, garlic, and dirty feet! lol

They are a delecasy that is not easy to afford if you cant find them yourself. On the local market here in the Pacific North West i have seen them as high as 300$ a pound!!!!

Sorry no habitat shots, maybe next time.

Enjoy!

You're rich with that bounty! Now don't let the truffle mafia get you. :D
Thanks for sharing that piece a1pha. I'd never seen it before.

I'm not sure how the Oregon Whites stack up to the French and Italian or the Chinese truffle but I'll tell you the ones Mrs Ice House and I dig are so fragrant, sooooo delicious! My bird dog can find them with about 50% accuracy. The hardest part about it is getting her to be serious.

Thanks for sharing
