The steel pad is dense, but the wire is round, and that caused in my experience dripping material. It's also made of finer wire and that makes slightly more difficult to make perfect fitting screen. One also has to be careful to remove any small wire pieces, as in worst case they might end up in one's throat, but unlikely of course...
I think it's better to be slightly loose to allow good airflow.
Chore boy copper scrubber mesh works best for me, is cheap on ebay(even cheaper if locally available) and one pack of them lasts me for very long time, while the liquid pads have rather high price for two pads.
I tried stainless steel mesh once and it gave metallic taste. But maybe it was poor quality... When I tried liquid pad it gave no metallic taste, probably because it was better quality stainless steel
