You can use some of your lye to make lime by mixing it with calcium chloride, if you prefer using a limetek.

Another route - the old skool way - is burning limestone. An oxy-propane torch provides fun, but make sure you wear welding glasses - it gets very bright! Hydrating calcium oxide its also highly entertaining (for a simple-minded nerd like me, at least). Again, eye protection is a must.


As far as extracting goes, I'd say you're best off just getting to grips with the fundamental principles of it so you'll have the flexibility to adapt your methods to the resources available.

swim did his first extraction using normans tek

first messed up by puting in the pre powdered root bark in before adding lye and water.

and also used 20ml water instead of 15 becouse its pre powdered bark


and when taking naptha out it was not yellow but got rly cloudy when taken out freezer after 3 hours
what could have happened?

Here is an absolutely FIRST CLASS set of videos for learning important chem lab techniques. The 20 minute video "Recrystallization" is invaluable for spice ultra-purification considerations. "Reaction Workup I" will give understanding of the wash steps of extractions.

For instance what is a salt, acid, or base are. Same goes for terms like pH, pKa, weak acids, weak bases, conjugate acid/bases, titration, polar and non polar solvent, oxidation, reduction etc. etc.

- use "Extraction Help" for quick questions
- use new threads to start ongoing discussions
- state plant and tek used, if the tek is from another site, post a link
- state at least an approximate weight or volume of materials used, no - "I put in the lye was it enough?" sort of thing.
