What are your thoughts on alcohol?

Migrated topic.
Psychotropic drugs have long history of the social use described in this thread, and it's no surprise the most accessible such drug (do humans live anywhere without yeast and sugar?) is also the most popular and accepted globally ex caffeine. Certain Islamic countries show that role can be replaced, but I wouldn't expect that soon elsewhere.

David Nutt has been trying to bring a safer alcohol replacement to market in the UK. The product and company were both initially called "Alcarelle". They now seem to be selling "Sentia" from a subsidiary of "GABA Labs". That doesn't seem to contain any synthetic ingredients, just plant extracts that likely have mild effects (though perhaps effects worth exploring, like this paper and thread on the GABA-mediated anxiolytic activity of Passiflora incarnata, probably from flavonoids).

I've seen speculation that "Alcarelle" was a designer benzo, but their patent applications seem to have been terminated before publication so perhaps we'll never know. Recreational use of non-ethanol GABAergic drugs has a possibly yet worse history than ethanol itself of people waking up unable to remember why they're in jail, and the phrase "designer recreational benzo" seems pretty concerning in general. Nutt is certainly better-qualified than I am to design it, but I'm surprised that of all the possible receptors to target he chose that one.

Maybe other people just genetically like GABAergic drugs more than I do? If yes then I'm probably lucky for that.

I appreciate you sharing it. I think your explanation is excellent. I concur that how each individual utilizes alcohol is just as important as the substance itself. While it can help some people connect and open up, it can actually harm others. Although it doesn't work that way for everyone, your narrative demonstrates how alcohol helped you overcome obstacles and connect with others. The secret, in my opinion, is to be honest with yourself about whether it's gradually holding you back or helping you.
