I did it 27 years and you said it well. A good salesperson is a professional. I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I have had some of the same clients for 20+ years. Some are dear and invaluable close friends now as are many of their family members... You know I'm a laid off psyconaut I believe you said.

I'm currently getting a degree in biochemistry, but all of my employment comes from performance art gigs.
I do magic, fire dancing and fire eating in and around the towns near my school. Birthday parties, community events, and street-shows are all good ways to earn money doing performance. The pay isn't bad, given the risks, but it's not steady work, especially not in the winter.

If I thought I could support myself and a family doing it, I would give up everything and be a performer. There's nothing like the look on people's faces when you do something impossible right before their eyes.

I belong to a local circus troupe, and am trying to get us more steady gigs.

Best job on earth.

I'm no politician, but I work with them regularly. They are an odd bunch for sure, but I have been regularly impressed with their abillity to take in new ideas and be open minded.

What they are sensitive to is taboo. Taboo kills politicians -- just ask Todd Akin. Many things are taboo, like saying a problem can't be fixed, or that children are annoying... or that non-corporate drugs are acceptable.

I think the root of ethneogen accptance is more about taboo than the closed mindedness of politicians. That's one of the reasons I love Nexus-- It's breaking down the taboo one inquisitive reader at a time.

I suspect there are plenty of politicians who would love for the drug war to go away. It's an expensive and wasteful boondoggle and we are broke. But you are right that the taboo problem is huge. Make a move to end the drug war and your opponents quickly tar you as being pro-drug or a part of society's decadence. For example, it's tough enough to be the first black president, with a known history of drug experimentation during high school... For that politician to try ending the drug war is a very complex and loaded issue.

Anyway, not to derail this thread. Lets keep it on the career topic...

I was for a brief while, interested in taking a career in politics. My teacher was very keen for me to continue the subject, but it felt to me like I wouldn't be able to make a great difference, unless I became a well recognised figure, at which point my private life would probably be heavily scrutinised. It seems like a big sacrifice to make. I really do sympathise with politicians (well, some of them anyway), they are just people after all.

I ended up starting a degree in neuroscience, but due to poor health I've had to drop out unfortunately. So now I'm considering doing a music course, which would be less presure and probably a lot more fun. But the question is, can I make a decent living from that?
It's a bit like what Nathaniel said, if I could support myself and live my life solely on that, that would be wonderful, but I don't really know how feasible it is as a career route. The only thing is, with my health the way it is right now, intensive higher education is not an option. At least I'll be doing what I really enjoy, and isn't that the dream?

I am an artisan. I build stuff, with my hands, from natural materials sourced from my local environment. When my work goes really good, when I'm given proper budget and a good measure of artistic license, my work is functional art. In the worst of times, it still looks good and is built well. It's pretty satisfying. I visualize something and then I build it. Outside, on my own schedule. Heck, I love what I do!

The past month or so...I've been doing work that is not quite as artistic as I would rather. Looking very much forward to a sculpture that I've been comissioned to build, later on in the summer. But these past couple months, I've been working way too hard, stressing too much. The level of freedom I attained when I became self employed is great...it's only been the past year or two that my work has become really artistically gratifying as well....still, I need to step it up, change something, find the next level.

I'm thinking that i will enter into a semi-retirement soon. Give up my current residence, stop chasing money --just do my land work for pleasure and art, live off my savings for a few years and focus more on writing and painting and gardening.

i work on high voltage power lines, make a large amount of money... and hate it.. I used to love making all that money but now i see it as counter productive to my being. Ive been racking my brains trying to find something else that would help me live a better quality of life. Im just so scared of being broke, i feel like its too overwhelming, even though that's truly what i want in life. just scared i guess.

I'm not really comfortable getting specific, but I am essentially a businessman.

I wear a suit and tie, show up at an office, am accountable to no one (other than clients who entrust me with their assets). I set my own ceiling, compete with the best (and most shark-like) people in my industry, work 6-7 days a week, sometimes love it and other times don't. It's an assload of pressure on the best of days, but I get off on the energy to be honest.

It doesn't define me by any means. I've got other passions and things in my life that I care more deeply about. But I don't have the luxury of chilling in mom's basement or going on welfare because society sucks. I have a family to support. And the truth is that I'm good at what I do, provide a valuable service and am compensated very well for it. I think that's fairly cool.

But I'm very clear that it's all a game. I put on my costume, leave the house and play the requisite role. And I'm usually okay with that. I enjoy it, actually - at least when it's good and things are going my way. I like my life compartmentalized like that. I always have, for some reason.



Would I rather be sitting under a shady tree, smoking weed and drawing a healthy salary just for being me? I don't know... I'd probably miss the thrill of the hunt and the weird top secret dichotomy.
