what is a hash-tag?

Migrated topic.
I have never used Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, or any of the social media sites, so I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to all things related to them...

...And this has been driving me crazy, but I've been too embarrassed to ask anybody in person...

What the hell is a "hash-tag?"

It's not like I'm even that old, I'm fairly tech savy, I have just never used any form if social media, the nexus is the closest thing to social media I use...

I'm still not quite sure what Twitter does, I know you can leave short lines of text for others to see, but that's about it, then you see "hash-tag-this and hash-tag-that" every where you go...

I believe it's a tag that is only used by stoners, just like shroomtag for shroomers.
Used to be Cannabis-tag, but that was too long. So it's hash-tag now...

(It's just a tag that uses the hash or number symbol # to seperate it from regular text for instance: #nosillyquestions )

Hashtag: (on social media sites such as Twitter) a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic.

My definition: an unnecessary, but weirdly popular way to communicate.

I don't have a twitter and only use Facebook to talk to family occasionally.

#dmt #dmtnexus

Haha on many social media sites and apps prefixing a word or unspaced term with #

Makes the "hashtag" a hyperlink to a cachè of identically tagged tweets, pics; posts

It's just a part of the culture, a good and effective mode of info transportation .. However it's abuse potential is high hah

Twitter is cool, you can build your own newsfeed, since every outlet posts its news on twitter, too. Like a Youtube for news. Just subscribe to the outlet you like. And unsubscribe if they annoy you. You can also use twitter as a disqus account and troll the outlets who have implemented it (or add a sensible comment if you like). Random hash tags confuses the NSA, btw. So here we go: #burzum #cancer #kefir #إسطنبول

For personal communication it's meh.

I'm still confused...and trying to understand it made me like it even less than I did before...

I have to be Social on the nexus to obtain research information, it seems on Twitter and Facebook people are just talking to talk or to hear their own bloody thoughts...nonsense if you ask me...

I could not even get Facebook to work, do you have to be a member to get that site to do anything? Screw that.

But then again I've never been on the same page as the rest of the planet...

You post a bit of information and close with a #-tag. Now everyone knows what this bit of information is about. Not only your readers but also search. Enter #dmt and you will get all tweets (for instance) that were categorized as DMT related:

It's mostly used to create and share memes and other kinds of circlejerk behaviour though.

It's actually a way to group together information about one specific topic.
Twitter was actually a platform invented by some ITers to share information about programming around the world. It was really handy for them as they could easily get to new information very quickly.

For instance when there is a big tragedy like the tsunami they use a hashtag 'tsunami' for that so everyone who has some news about it can post it. That way all info on the tsunami is grouped together for everyone to see. Hope that makes sense.

It's actually a handy tool, but used in a very sad sad way today...

just think of it as you have picked up a book and flipped to the index in the back.... its really just an easy way to connect specificly tagged informations.
