whats the best solvent to use if one is in the UK?

SWIM want to do this propperly. the solvent SWIM have just doesn't seem to be shifting at all,
(Asda own brand white spirit, and B&Q Own brand white spirit/turpentine substitute (naptha)
and I had it on the fans for a good 2 weeks solid now, plus a couple days/4 hours a day
on 60*C water bath with extreme fanning, full power.

:(

all that is there is about an inch of solvent which is sorta dark yellow, looks to be
a good pull if it would just fucking SHIFT.

:(

also anyone knows what the best solvent to use is , in the UK?

swim used to think swim knew what I was doing, but I think swim may have encountered
dmt n-oxide does this seem likely if swims stock has been sitting in NaOH ph 13 for like
5 - 6 months?

Are you serious? Varsol is the way to go for a clean extract? Approximately 1kg of powdered mimosa is waiting still for 2 years in my closet cause i cant find VM&P naphta....and all this time waiting...had it right here...Varsol!

Does someone actually done a successful extract with Varsol brand?

Even the paraffin sold in the gardening section of places like B&Q and Focus works for extraction (sold as fuel for greenhouse heaters, it's the heavier yellow naptha). Cheap and plentiful (5.99 for 5 litres or thereabouts).

It seems to be much kinder to seals and my perspex turkey baster than white spirit, which immediately attacked the perspex - with paraffin the perspex remained unclouded and it was easier to see any base solution settle to the bottom of the baster before you put it back in the jar. It's a pain in the arse to evaporate though, especially in large quantities, so i'd only recommend using when doing a series of freeze precipitations (you get pretty clean product despite the colour of the naptha).

Having said that, i've not tried a white spirit extraction from start to finish yet (just attempting to see if I can retrieve the last dregs from a 150g extraction), I have 150g of MHRB waiting in the wings to be reduced to powder and another 500g in reserve, maybe i'll do a proper comparison and post results if anyone's interested. Maybe if white spirit is more active in attacking seals and basters it'll also be more effective in extracting the goods from the base.

White spirit IMO is the best OTC defatting solvent available in the UK. Its a mixture of high boiling naphtha and a smaller amount of aromatics. Less stinky/noticeable than xylene or toluene and much easier to obtain. Pulls a lot more crap than naphtha defats.

Just got my white spirit pull from the freezer, and got a really nice amount of crystals from a 150g STB that has already been extracted from about 3-4 times with paraffin, and has been sat under my sink for over a week now (rubs hands with glee and cackles like a mad scientist). This purple/pink MHRB just keeps on giving, I suspect I threw away my first batch WAY too early now.

I think i'll be using white spirit for all future pulls, I just have to find a turkey baster that doesn't get attacked by the solvent.

Swim was under the impression that White Spirits is just the U.K. name for VM&P Naptha. Would swim be wrong in assuming this?

what about replacing this hard to get Naphta's with that so pure and easy to get Toluene wich is suitable for a/b extraction of E...???
I tried to burn some white spirit in a "historic"lamp, and it fumes some black, very smelly vapors.
I passed my hand thru this vapors and i had some black residue in my hand. but not tested the low odours white spirits and turpentine substitutes.
Did some one try?.

Why are you resurrecting a 3 year old thread, drakkar?

Anyways, to answer your question, White Spirit (even low odour) is "heavy naphtha". Lighter fluid, such as Ronsonol and Newport, is "light naphtha" and makes evaporating the solvent a million times quicker.

I assume that many are finding this thread via google whilst trying to source Naptha in the UK.

(Sorry for bumping an old thread)

You can buy Ronsonol lighter fluid in bulk on e-bay, it is 99%> Naptha, you can buy it in packs of 12 for quite literally pennies.

£16 (Probably a little over 20 bucks) for 12 bottles of Naptha. Perfect pulls, evaporates quickly. Bob's your uncle.

I'm not sure if the EPE Wad leaks out plasticizers, but the same goes for the RONSON caps.

Great post - the first item looks perfect. With the worry of dead links for future readers of this thread, googling any of the below will give you what you need:

- Ronsonol Lighter Fluid
- Swan lighter fluid
- Shellsol A
- Shellsol T
- White Spirit (from any DIY shop, though takes an age to evaporate and stinks)

You could pull the spice out of the white spirit by doing an A/B on it. White spirit is cheap, plentiful and pulls more strongly than light naphtha. If you use light naphtha later less will be needed and you get an extra cleaning step in your process.
