It's a very good plan, these are powerful substances. It's not like there's a specific "level" that you need to reach, I think the point is finding out what works for you and your intentions. Taking psychedelics is partly a skill, so by starting low you can learn, improve, and also determine the limit of where you want to go.
For example, when I started having Ayahuasca-like brews in the (northern) spring this year, I started very very low at first, with almost no effects, and slowly went up. I think I'll still go further up in the future, but for the moment I've found a dose that works for me right now. I'm glad I was patient and did it slow, I've learned a lot and it has been very meaningful in my life. So I think your approach is very good.
