PLEASE- can we bury the myth of benzodiazepines being off-limits with MAOIs.The British National Formulary is the source I use for checking potential interactions and this states concomitant use is not hazardous.Medical practise in the UK doesnt use much in the way of MAOIs but Ive seen patients on both medications quite a few times and the combination is accepted as safe.

^^Yes, correct. Alprazolam aka xanax is a potent benzo derivative; it is fine with DMT alone or with MAOIs alone, hence I see no problem with both ie ayahuasca.

I might not be an expert in this area, but to state that benzodiazepines are no hazardous in conjuction with MAOIs just from one source is probably not the right thing to do. I mean, just because one says so, I'm not gonna blindly believe what he says, if I'm really concerned by my health, I'll do research after research and try to find as many sources as possible, some stating the same and some contradicting, and then try to reach the answer.

I'm sorry but I didn't understand one thing here, since you say that the medical practice doesn't use much in the way of MAOIs, was the medication that you've seen given to the patients, was it with MAOIs or not? What were the quantities of each medication? Was there any side effects? if yes, which were?

I'll give a worldly known example, Ecstasy mixed with Alcohol, it's widely known that this is a mix one shouldn't do because it can be deadly, mainly due do dehydratation.
But from this widely knowledge, it's also true that it doesn't affect every person the same way, and the setting where you mix these two also influentiate the outcome, inside a disco (where heat high) the risk is higher than for example outside with lots of fresh air.
And talking about quantities, if you take 1/4 of an Ecstasy pill and take 1/4 of a glass of vodka, the probability of happening something deadly to you is lower comparatively to an intake of 1 pill and 2 or 3 glasses of vodka.

Again, you "see no problem" or are you 100% sure there is no problem? If you're 100% sure, please supply a link to back it up.
And just because, as you say "it is fine with DMT alone or with MAOIs alone", this doesn't make it fine to use with both, and as an example - Ecstasy with Weed is fine .. Alcohol with Weed is fine ... But Ecstasy + Alcohol + Weed is NOT fine.

So, if you could supply with a link or more to back up your statements, that would be very appreciated.

And please people, do not blindly believe what one says without looking for more sources and understanding it by yourself. And by "what one says" I mean be it a person or a company, if it's just one source, than look for more.
This is a common error, mainly because people look for an answer that coincides with what one wants, and when they find it, they get peace of mind thinking it's safe, but in the end, it might not be.

deeamteez-my source is the British National Formulary which lists all the medications prescribed in the UK by doctors (of which I am one);it also lists all the interactions and contraindications plus side effects.This is a fully trustworthy source and is recognised by The Royal College of Physicians here in the UK as fully authoritative.

I stand by my statement.Perhaps, if those who disagree, could provide a reference stating that the combination is hazardous.


EDIT- I use a hardcopy of the BNF daily, but if you doubt what I say please look up the history of the BNF and evidence of its reliability.Also, if you are still sceptical, look up the treatment of the seizures caused by MAOI overdoses which is.........benzodiazepines!!:roll: :lol:

corpus callosum, when I asked for you to supply a link, was only because I had been at the BNF website and the Search function didn't give me any results, and I really mean zero results, probably I need to be registered or something. I even tried the simple search the BNF says to do as an example, which is, put in the search box "aspirin", and no results for me. I even tried xanax, valium, benzo, benzodiazepine, etc, and still no result. So I'm guessing I need to be registered, this was why I asked for a link, sometimes to see a link on some websites you don't need to be registered to be able to see it.

I did do a quick search on benzos with MAOIs and didn't find much information about it being deadly.
What I did find in much quantity, was information about people mixing benzos with psychedelics, and people seem to do it mainly to try and lower the anxiety associated with the trip with no major side effects, appart from feeling some drowsiness and even some sleepy after glow the day after.

I gotta say, something that popped my attention was actually you saying "PLEASE- can we bury the myth of benzodiazepines being off-limits with MAOIs", my first thought was, if there is a myth, probably there is a reason behind the myth.
However, I did try to find the "myth", but all the searches brought no actual real results, so basicly, there was no myth to begin with.

As for my skepticism, I'm sorry, but that's just how life has been presenting to me.

^^ deeamteez-youve no need to apologise; I agree that one should always maintain a degree of sceptism in life, and not take someones word as gospel without looking into things further.

Unfortunately ,you do have to register with the BNF site, but as Ive said, I keep a copy of the book with me as I think its vital to have at hand when prescribing medications.I hope your research has shown you its a document which is solid in its information.

I assure you and all Nexians that any medical-type stuff I post is always considered and if necessary researched.If Im not sure of something I always check before posting because I value all of you people and have alot of respect for you all and wouldnt want to feed you aload of bullshit.If I dont know ,I will investigate.Hence, a 'professional' attitude is what I try to adopt.

As you are struggling to access the site, let me list the medications which are problematic with the RIMA type of MAOIs:

Analgesics-CNS excitation or depression (causing hyertension or hypotension) with DXM, pethidine and possibly fentanyl, morphine and other opioids.Cerianly avoid RIMAs with DXM and pethidine;

Anorectics/Sympathomimetics eg ephedrine/pseudoephedrine as in cold treatments; other sympathomimmetics to be avoided include dexamfetamine, dopamine, dopexamine, isometheptene, ritalin and phenylpropanolamine.

SSRI antidepressants and also the tricyclics.

Antimalarials- artemether and lumefantrines makers advise avoiding MAOIs with these.

Dopaminergics-causes increased side effects with levodopa; it can be used with caution with entacapone but should be avoided with selegiline.

Bupropion ie Zyban- avoid RIMAs with this.

5HT1 agonists-risk of CNS toxicity with the migraine drugs Rizatriptan, sumatriptan snd xolmitriptan.

The only sedative to be avoided with RIMAs is Buspirone.


I used the term Myth as some months ago I saw the very same claim on one of the Ayahuasca forums frontpages.

Just to reiterate, and believe whatt you will, the combination is regarded in my profession as safe
