In this TedTalk Lee Cronin talks about the future of 3D printing and Organic Chemistry, saying eventually we could print our medicines. Which means we can download the code online that makes DMT then print the pure stuff. There will be a way to hack a printer like that, similar to an iPhone its inevitable. Can't wait!

The liberation that technology provides people is such a wonderful thing; it brings me so much joy.

I had not thought about this before, and the media emphasized the violent things one could do with such technology ( e.g., "You can print a handgun with a 3D printer that shoots and kills people! Ahhh!" ).

These little printers could provide anything given the proper materials, just like materializers straight out of science fiction. Imagine the people in the third world who could be helped by such innovations! And the ability to manufacture in one's home with a safely regulated device would cut down on other pollution from manufacturing.

I am so proud that we are moving toward a liberated, free world. There are challenges that we face, but entropy always wins in the end.

It is a fabled type of invention that has probably been thought of as an impossible idea ever since mankind has been able to conceive of such magic! LOL. I myself can just not wrap my around the idea and somehow think it is ridiculous and all you people are insane for believing in such hocus pocus. lol...

which is in itself ofcourse a ridiculous mindset because I believe in way more insane stuff myself I mean hyperspatial elf folks.. come on man....

The potential game changing effect of such technology can't really even be comprehended, by my little mind at least.

A reality where there is no poverty due to lack, access by all to medicine, foods, even luxuries. All you'd need would be a store of raw materials, carbon and the like, and voila!

DMTheory uses the term regulated and that's the lynch pin here. Without locks and restrictions, yes, poverty could be ended, hierarchies would be dismantled, and the potential of humanity could be realized. By a printer.

By "regulated" I was going for not producing pollution that harms the surrounding environment. Third/second world production nations in many cases do not have legal standards for factories that put horrid toxins into the environment, and if people had production capabilities in their own homes, this could also be a concern.

Of course I wouldn't want the government regulating what could exactly be produced by the printer, but I feel as if the tech will take off faster than can be regulated. I doubt an Internet connection would be required in the future to print once you have the blueprints, in which case the manufacturer would have to put the constraints on the printer.

But at the same time, if one is allowed to print a legal drug, I feel like it would be too much to specify which chemicals could and could not be printed. However this would cause an issue with potential terrorists being able to get a hold of dangerous chemicals and possibly even biological agents. So maybe the constraints would be required, but it's so hard to say at this point. I'm sure there's engineers and philosophers going wild about these right now.

you don't even need a 3d printer to do such things, just a modified inkjet printer

My DMT never prints out right the corners always warp and it smells of Plastic.

In all seriousness I think the previous post is right. You don't really need a "3d printer" most of these either squeeze hot plastic or use light, neither of which are great ways to make a compound molecule. Inkjet would have much finer control of drop size and placement as well as having better provision for holding multiple substances in the ink cartridges. If you need it to go 3d just drop the print bed.

The delta robot printer I made could probably be modded to do some intricate lab work where precision was key but it would just be like high tek picking and packing.

I can see GM enzymes and protiens becoming used more and more for drug production. Let nature to do the hard work for you.
