Yields and how to make them higher.

So my cousin did this for the first time recently. Using Marsofolds technique, she did it twice. One with 48g mh bark and once with 75. Both times it went well in terms of layers separating, freeze precipitation working etc. Came out with very nice white fluffy crystals. Based on a goal of .75% weight, expected close to a gram.

Ended up with more like 0.3g.

Assuming a few possibilities:

The bark wasn't as high in content as it could be.

Left it in the naphtha without it crystallizing and discarded it.

Left it in the basifijed water and discarded it.

Didn't do an ammonia wash or anything after the freeze precipitation so nothing lost there.

Where else can go wrong? For the time/effort/money involved obviously want to improve yields.
Is 1% realistic or not really.

bingobobsdong,

If the steps were followed correctly, your cousin should have gotten good results..Maybe poor quality bark? It's hard to tell? SWIM thinks 1% is possible...but don't expect 1% after Re-X. If she still has the base MHRB solution it might be worth trying a couple more pulls to see if something comes out.

SWIM's first time didn't go well either even though SWIM followed each step. The key is to slow down and take your time with the TEKs. Patients and care and you'll be rewarded with spice.

Let us know what happens...

If all of the ratios are followed correctly and the naptha is given proper agitation in the basified solution, the problem with low yields is usually from the freeze precip - either not a cold enough freezer, the naptha isn't saturated enough, or both.
Hope you didn't throw anything away!

Thanks. She definitely followed the ratios correctly and was happy at how smoothly everything went. Was very careful to do each step properly.

Re. her freezer - was between -20 to -25C. If I understand correctly, are you saying that some but not all can freeze if temperature is too low?

Re. the saturation, that may well be it - I will tell my cousin to try evaporating a bit before freeze precip.

My cousin tried using warm naptha on some pulls and will probably try even warmer next time. Agitation should be fine.
Is it possible to leave the bark in the basified water too long? I figure not if one of the pulls is after 3 days.

Idk if SWIY's do this but SWIM used the empty naptha container for sucking the layer off the top and came out with over 1% yield with 100g of MHRB. That was a 2nd time extracting with greater results then using a tukey baster. Maybe the naptha fumes and liquid already inside container would presoak better for evaporation. I don't know for sure if this fact just observation & probubly dosn't help much but somthing to keep in mind.
