I, too, was once very interested in the Shroud. But having gone back and forth a few times, I had seen/heard sufficient evidence to conclude it was probably fraudulent.

I believe the article is stating that on the other side there's a second face that's slightly different but obviously of the same person...proving that it wasn't any kind of reproduction with photo emulsions or paint. also when they examined the layers of the cloth, the middle didn't show signs of anything. which can mean different things, but supports the idea of a huge release of energy leaving a "shadow" of the person left behind.
