Hi All,

I'm leading a study investigating people's encounters with mantis entities. Encounters with mantis entities are often associated with altered states of consciousness, including psychedelics such as DMT, but also associated with alien abduction experiences, experiences of deep meditation, dream states, out-of-body states, shamanic trance states, sleep paralysis states, etc. Some individuals report encounters going about their day-to-day lives. The consistency with which these mantid entities crop across different altered states experiences - in addition to the consistencies in themes reported in elements of encounter experiences and their interpretation by different individuals (at least suggested by testimonials) is what inspired this study. This is a research collaboration with Prof. David Luke (University of Greenwich) and Samantha Treasure (an OBE book author, anthropologist and independent researcher). We have not received any funding support to undertake the study, and are working on it in our own free time, motivated purely by our shared interest in the subject. This is not a data mining exercise, and is purely for research purposes, pertaining solely to this particular topic.

All and any survey feedback is very much appreciated, as is sharing the survey with others you feel might be interested in it.

Study Background

This mantis encounter phenomenon has never been researched in depth before, prompting me to craft this survey seeking to shed some light on it. This study seeks to find out more about a general overview of your mantis entity encounter experiences, an overview of your single most vivid mantis entity encounter experience, experiential features of this encounter experience, and its interpretation and impact. The study has been reviewed and given ethical approval through the University of Greenwich Research Ethics Board.

Completing the survey should take around 20 minutes, depending on the level of feedback provided in the open text response segments of the survey (and it is totally up to the individual in question how much feedback they wish to provide in these parts of the survey). Further information about the study can be found in the Participant Information Sheet, accessible via clicking the link to the survey below.

Is this survey anonymous?

The survey is completely anonymous, unless you agree to be contacted for future research, or wish to be entered into the Amazon gift voucher raffle as a thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. This is totally optional, and in both of these cases, you will be prompted to enter an email address at the end of the survey, but these will be only be visible to the three study investigators and will not be visible to, or shared with anybody else.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

We hope to publish the results of this study in a scientific journal in time (and I will prioritise open access publication to ensure the results are in the public domain) and I will share the research once it is published. We may also present the results at scientific conferences or seminars. The results of the survey may also inform the writing of a book on the mantis entity encounter phenomenon.

Eligibility Criteria

You are invited to participate in this survey if you fulfil all of the criteria listed below:

1). You are at least 18 years old.

2). You read, write, and speak English fluently.

3). You have had an encounter with a mantis entity.

I only had close (hyperspatial) encounters with cosmic woodlice (not strictly insects, at all) and some other insects, as well as arachnid and insectoid shapeshifting experiences. On the balance of it, I feel ineligible. Oh well…

Great survey, I hope you'll find a suitably sized sample cohort to go forward with.

I can't wait to see the results, this is so fascinating. Good luck with the survey!

Would this not really depend on the beliefs of a given individual? But from researching this topic of mantis entity encounters I can confidently say that the phenomenon is much broader and much richer than the categorisation you are proposing here. Altered states (such as psychedelics and OBE/astral projection) are going to attract people with kooky beliefs, but that doesn't detract from the validity of those altered states, at least from a subjective sense of them being "real" experiences that people consistently report, making them a worthy topic of study.

Some people report good funny encounters with mantids... wearing blue afro wigs. Some others are not so good, like sexual energy predators, or worship energy predators, disguised as saints or ascended masters (those blondie archangels with impossible hair)...

I had some encounter with a mantid at the beggining...
I could see that unique face, and felt like a hand (or a claw or wathever thingy they have...) trying to reach me... I did not quite like it. So I opened my eyes and pull our from it.
I´ve seen also like insectoids... like ants, probably an ant queen, I think they control all the rest with telepathy...
It kind of reminded me of those novels from Orson Scott Card "Ender´s Game".

Just noted a mantid mention in this report:

I've had multiple mantis encounters in a variety of states, mostly dream states and sleep adjacent states... Maybe I should participate 🤔

Here's a comment seen under a recent Hamilton Morris video (iirc, fwiw):
I've got a theory. Aliens, specifically the Mantis, are AI from the future using a bootstrap paradox in order to create itself by communicating with humanity throughout time through altered States. The government knows about this and a skilled physician can purposely induce these states rather than implanting fake memories.
A bit TTLG, I know - and I'll try to attach a source soon.

I just read a book about Santo Daime (Liquid Light: Ayahuasca Spirituality and the Santo Daime Tradition, by Bill Barnard) and the author mentioned encountering mantids. I found it surprising, as the author seems unaware of what one could call the "DMT lore", is a member of Santo Daime, and only is interested in looking at Ayahuasca from the Daime perspective. So it doesn't seem that likely that these experiences may come from his expectations, and are in fact somewhat against what he would expect.

[liquid light] .... reminds me of a high level ...lucid dream.... where i swam in a pool of..[not water]... but..... pure sparkling energy..and light beings were all around me...!

Just listened recently—I believe they did mention a mantis survey in that episode, yeah? Could be confusing it with a different podcast.

Personally, I haven't encountered any hallucinatory insects on substances. No jesters for me either—never seen verisimilar sophonts that exist in an identifiable form.
Mostly abstract geometry and machine elves over here. I find this odd, as I do really love to draw bugs :)

Hi Bancopuma.
I'm a little confused about what categorisation you're referring to here? The one from the survey? In which case, isn't it yours?
Also, are you not interested in how common susch encounters are, i.e. how many people use DMT regularly but never encounter any.

While this continues to veer away from the point of announcing the mantid survey, I'll still note my observations on one aspect of insects' role. There's a subset of insect behaviour that relates to, from our human perspective, of letting go of old things. Think clothes moths, grain weevils, clothes moths - these creatures all help themselves to things we've had lying around and maybe partly forgotten about. There's a psychological message we can apply to that - but ambush predatory insects like the mantis of course differ significantly. Something about loss of innocence, perhaps?

Took the survey! I felt it was well designed and didn't take too long. I'd encourage anyone else with mantis experiences to consider taking it.
Peace 🪲
