ammonia wash vs recrystallization

i was wondering what the chemistry is behind the ammonia wash? i have about 400 mg of yellow and white crystals from a first pull was wondering if i should wash with freezer cold ammonia over crystal filter papers OR dissolve crystals drop by drop in hot hexane (which i will need to buy), and recrystallize in a tall thin container with a string put down the middle for the crystals to grow on, then capped and put in the freezer ? i think i might just be going with the ammonia wash due to its simplicity, but i am wondering exactly what the hell it does exactly.

Yes, me too, I'd like to hear an explanantion about this step, what's going on - you wash out the excess lye's (OH-) to make ammonium hydroxide..? or you wash out the sodium from lye..? Ammonium (NH4+) forms from the ammonia(NH3-), and floating around, they both would take out different impurities with the rinse water, while the dmt stays insoluble. Or do you loose yeild by this step...? 400 mg - what % is yellow.? howcome you'd suspect impurities..? Is there any reason you wouldn't save yourself those 10 good hits, and just mix up the yellow and white ? From Swim I hear that about 20% yellow-dmt could be normal for a first pull from MHRB, and then there are near 0% yellow oils in the following ones, so yellow is a rare variety usually. Do others folks here also believe that the yellow oils add some 'potency' either by burning hotter and/or by carrying other alkaloids dissolved in the liquid..?! And that with a little yellow extract mixed in, it makes it easier to launch...?

My friend had that kind of color on a nth pull from a very good batch. However he said me that a very yellow, almost gold color from a first pull was harsh to smoke and produced a unpleasant trip. He had to recrystalise it.

yeah. i tried to cover it incredibly basically in that a/b tek, but in general crystals smoke better than powder. I'd say some I've met would prefer large yellow crystals over white powder because it's easier for them to work with (especially as the effects come on)...though it is a bit harsher on the lungs. Now, clear crystals....blsladflsakflsakfldsa! :shock: :lol: :D

An old friend of my Mom's psychology teacher's yoga instructor affectionally known as Terrence has also generated some pale yellow shards and would like to clean them up. He is considering disolving the impure spice in warm naphtha, washing with 4pH water, discarding the naphtha layer, basifying to 13 pH, then pulling the spice back out with naphtha. Is this a practical defat method for spice already in the crystalized form in the opinion of you folks in the know? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to offer up a huge "Thank You" for the wealth of information Terrence has picked up on this killer site that got him this far.

Just dissolve them in as few hot naphta as possible. You should see 2 'layers', the bottom will be a drop of oily darker thing. Just pour the top of the naphta and let it slowly evaporate. Keep the dark stuff apart in case of it would be smokable.

It is quite easy to dissolve all your spice in hot naptha and then after you stir and dissolve everything that can, pour it out through a paper filter into a clean glass dish. cover and let sit at room temp for a few days. The ammonia wash..eh, mixed feelngs about that. Have done it with bad results, recrystallizing is preferred over here. Perhaps washing with ice water after growing the crystals would be a good idea.

I too would be curious to know what the ammonia wash does. Being very clueless about it, it seems worrisome that you may be adding some toxic residue from the ammonia (unless it evaporates completely on drying, or vaporizes at a much higher temp or something? ).
