Canadian frustrations...

Hey guys, Ive got a quick question that may or may not have a simple answer and its directed at Canadian members, and more specifically, members around Vancouver.

Which Teks do the Canucks out their prefer. I mean this not only from a simplicity standpoint but also acquiring materials in country.

The preferred method would be the q21q21 tek, and still is. Ive come to realize that Pickling Lime is best found in the states though since its sale is banned in Canada in reasonable quantities. So with that in mind, are there Teks that are still somewhat user friendly that have materials that can be acquired locally? I don't need specific suppliers or anything like that, just wondering whats worked best for the Canadian members.

Ive read through the various methods and honestly I'm a little overwhelmed by all of the options etc.

if you have a friend in the states or know a way to get even a standard amount of pickling lime (i find that one bag from walmart and on their website is enough for multiple extractions) then i suggest you do so for the Q21Q21 tek. i am relatively new to extracting and have used Q21Q21's tek with great success more than 10 times now. attached are pictures of some of my results

the foodsafe aspect of this tek combined with the ease of preparation just cannot be beaten. it is the safest tek there is hands down, your acid/base are vinegar/pickling lime. do the fluffy white funfest with the pickling lime (Mrs. Wages works amazing) and you will not regret it.

So even though pickling lime is banned for sale here will it make it across the border with customs or would it be safer to just drive it across with some groceries I pickup sometime?

If you found the bark and are able to get that into Canada then I doubt you have anything to worry about. Calcium Hydroxide is also in aquarium PH supplies(Reef Kalkwasser), I don't think anyone would care if you shipped 5lb of of it from U.S.--for any purpose.

Just did a search to make sure I don't look like an idiot, and Canada's only banned calcium hydroxide as a food additive, so the pickling lime is an obvious no-go, but a calcium hydroxide derivative under a different label like Reef Kalkwasser and you're fine.

Calcium hydroxide from bulkfoods.com has never been seized in customs so far(n=3)

Even if it does get seized by some miracle, doubt it's going to raise any eyebrows. And monetary loss would be negligible. I would just order another bag right after lol

Well, I would just give one of the major online retailers a try (possibly one named after a large south american river). I doubt they are going to seize something packaged in something that clearly shows that it comes from a reputable company. I don't know shit about canadian customs. But I do live in Illinois, where the sale of lye is a bit restricted. I have no trouble ordering the stuff online.

One possibility is finding quicklime and converting it to calcium hydroxide with water. The reaction is exothermic, ie will get hot. Its potentially dangerous, but its possible. Probably more trouble than its worth.
