One of the reasons people do a wash with sodium carbonate is to remove all possible traces of lye. If any sodium carbonate is left in your final product it doesn't burn as badly as traces of lye does. You really don't want any lye in your final product. Inhaling small amounts of lye can cause serious burns in your lungs that hurt for several days.
Keep the pH at about 10.5 or above. At pH 9, some of the DMT will go into the wash water.
Ammonia shouldn’t be used as a wash to remove Sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide isn’t very soluble in Ammonia solutions, or so I’ve read.
