Disposing of Mimosa/Lye Solution

I came across an old thread in '09 that spoke about disposing the STB solution of mimosa/lye. I'm a bit conflicted as i came across a thread while looking for an answer in which a mod mentioned that solvents down the drain isn't a good idea.
I have a septic tank and am afraid of damaging piping and septic tank and whatsnots.
I just want to make sure that i'm not ruining anything in the process of dumping all this juice, so Id rather be safe than sorry.

I've done it down the drain a couple times of a toilet (dumped slowly over multiple flushings to ensure no clogging), but only when I was fearing the discreetness of dumping a large jar full of black murky chemical water while wearing safety goggles and gloves outside, I was paranoid of having cops called on me. As people IMO would tend to see that as a meth production like thing, which IMO is more frowned upon although probably carry the same penalty for production of both drugs equally. Otherwise dump it in the middle of a street better to litter tar with nasty things like lye then burning up grass and plants in your yard I think.

dude you're cracking me up. i'm totally guilty of this(dumping down the drain) and thought the exact same thing. didn't know what to do with spent jars of black gold. the only thing that is frowned upon is the placing of explosive solvents that can build up as gas in the drain . even small amounts. but what are you gonna do?

Exactly like I said I've done numerous purgings of the material in many varieties some more stealthy then others, once I even hid the sealed jar in a laundry basket under some clothes when making in an apt and brought the clothes out to the washing machine then ran real quick with the jar to the woods to dump near a nearly already dead patch of soil, Or like I said just throw it in the middle of the street eventually rain will dilute it and I'd rather poison a street than a plant.

Isnt lye a drain cleaner and sold to pour down drains to unclog?

If you can't just empty it into a drain, you can carefully, (goggles and gloves on), slowly add hydrochloric acid, test the ph to get it near neutral. Use a ph wand or test strips.

The neutralization reaction between HCl and NaOH turns it into water and salt.

Salt water is at least less caustic then lye.

Lye is a drain cleaner but mimosa mud with fibrous strands is not.

What?

Assuming you've removed all of the NPS, why would you not just pour it down the drain? Down the drain is infinitely less conspicuous and hazardous than dumping a highly caustic solution into the middle of a random street.

Sorry to go completley off topic here

I realize that new members arent suppossed to ask for a promotion or whatev its called, so i wont do it directly.
All that i will say, is that this community is my favorite website (besides possibly permaculturenews.org), and i truly feel that most of what the members speak of (in a generalized way), apply to me and are a part of my life in a major way.

Anywas, i would really like to post in the sustainability nexus and many other places, as sustainability is what i want out of my life, spiritually, physically, metaphorically, and shared.

I have been on a whole foods plant based LIFeSTYLE (its not a temporary diet, for me at least) for quite a few months (exception is eggs, as we need our B12, and it seems the most sustainable, caring way to get B12) and feel it is the only way to truly and sustainably eat, to say the least. I plan on going into the navy for a while, then fresh out of the navy i want to go to the permaculture research institute in nsw, australia, and learn and practice there for a bit (as well as WOOF there some). I would then like to go to other permaculture institutes around the world (funded by the navy and the GI bill), and learn and share as much as possible. Then, hopefully, eventually somewhat culimnating in buying 100 acres or so some place close to the equator, living with some sort of a community, preferably very close to the ocean, and possibly a volcano (maybe a bit overkill, but there would be biodiversity in the soil, at least). I would then like live out my years truly, 99.9% sustainably and lovingly, and sharing my knowledge with the locals and people around the world.

I have previously told myself to not choose where or really think to much about where i would be buying this property, yet recently peru has stuck out in my mind constantly. Oddly, Just today ive started reading the nexus community project, and it was my dream (yet obviously not only mine hehe).

I would really like to be a true member of this amazing community.

Ps: please dont take this as me asking, im just stating a few facts about me and this community (and indirectly asking )

Back to the op, you mentioned that you read something where a mod said something like"disposing of SOLVETS down the drain is a bad idea", yet your discussing disposing of a mimosa/lye solution.

The only solvent in the solution is water

It wasn't a random street it was a fairly private street and I did it at late night only did it 1ce on a street then realized it was a terrible idea to dump it anywhere. What do you do with it? I just think the mud in the jar would be bad for a toilet and impossible for a sink/shower.

I don't get you lot...its drain cleaner and the mud is plant matter...it's no worse than human waste...just chuck it down the toilet and flush.

It seems so messy/semi dangerous to pour out a gallon glass jar of lye water (What I use) it always caused huge splash back in any toilet I did it in as the lye water hit the toilet water...even when poured out slowly. I dunno if its just how shallow the water level in the toilet was causing it to hit hard and splash but either way, I only extract like once a year or so so don't have to worry about it that often. Of course I use gloves while doing it all, but still lol, also when I started extractions I was living in another woman's house, who knew my mom, I dunno why but she was ok with me extracting this chem I told her all about it as I was in her house didn't want to be disrespectful, she even let me use her shed to do it in private. Funny side story eventually she started dating a cop who was from the next state, one day the cop mentioned he wanted to help go through her shed and clean it out (It was extremely cluttered except the small work bench I used for extractions). She lied to the cop to give me time to clean up knowing I had a mix sitting stewing, she said she couldn't find the shed key, and I must have forgotten to replace it last time I mowed the lawn for her. Lol, was pretty awesome of her.

Couldnt you dilute it with water (if you must) and just pour it down the sink drain slowly? It may be better to dilute with vinegar as the acetic acid will eventually (alot of vinegar) neutralize the lye

down the loo is the way to go, if you dont want it to splash then just dont pour it directly in the water. i never have any problems this way
