Sounds like your spotting technique is pretty good, then. One more technique is to stretch out the capillary tube in a flame and cut it into two separate micropipettes for even smaller spot size. I would try increasing the concentration of the extract beforehand too, assuming the viscosity remains workable. Of course, at some point overloading of the spot could come into play which causes smearing and poor separation. [Maybe you've already read up on all of this, just putting it down for the record!]
