does dmt go bad?

Migrated topic.

Yes. Spark that at once!

I'm curious... how long does it take for it to go bad? I did an extraction a maybe a year ago, I still have a significant amount left... It doesn't seem to be reduced in potency at all.

I've read reports from 6months to years.... all depends on how it's stored, temp, humidity and so on. No way to know til you inhale 😉

If its gone bad, it won't cause any ill effects other than disappointment.

I had a stash of spice that sat in a non-air conditioned space for a year or two. When I tried it again it barely had any effect at all, when previously it had been STRONG. So yes it can go bad.

I enjoy smoking it in a joint- just bear in mind that there really is a short time window to choke that thing down if you want the full effects. I've had experiences where the trip started out strong and clear, then during the peak I fired up the remaining Roach. Rather than strengthening the trip, it often seems to kind of smear it out- like having two trips at once (imagine two movies playing at the same time on one screen). In that context it can have an almost dissasociative effect.

Ah yes, that would be why. I keep it inside a tin, inside a box, inside another box, in my drawer :D

So basically, it's not an inherent instability in the molecule, it's environmental degradation...

I am starting to wonder about this myself, as I let some of my acrb extracted goo to sit in the open air for probably a week. Heat and air are what degrade it, if I understand correctly. It's probably still active, but I keep thinking I may have wasted it somewhat from leaving it exposed to the air for so long. Hopefully I'm just worrying needlessly :) I just hate the idea of wasting any of this precious substance!

I don't think a week will do much at all, you are indeed worrying needlessly ;)

I store mine in pre-weighed airtight little bundles in the freezer (just keep in mind if you store it in the freezer make sure you let it come to room temp before opening it and exposing it to air or you may get condensation)... see last post of this thread.. very low tek but 9 months into it and they are as good as day one and since I don't smoke it that often this has worked great for me and will probably keep at least a year or two like this, if not more. It definitly degrades over a long period of time. For SWIM, it takes about a year for freebase dmt stored in a vial to become weak and inactive. Quality starts out snow white, and turns tan over time signalling degradation.

Even once it turns tan, active dmt can be salvaged from it by converting it to fumarate salt and then back to freebase, getting rid of the impurities.
