Yesterday Swim attempted his first extraction using 1lb of pre-ground MHRB following Noman's tek. 9 quart jars were used each containing 50g of MHRB, 50g of lye, and 750ml of water. Klean Strip brand vm+p naptha was used as the solvent. (Swim ran out of naptha after the 2nd pull from all the jars and the 3rd and 4th pulls were done with Klean Strip brand OMS) Now for Swim's problem... The collection jars were left in the freezer overnight and Swim did not awaken to the "snow globes" described in Noman's tek. One of the jars with naptha was poured through a filter and a TINY amount of white crystal was collected. Swim's talking three grains of salt from about 250ml of naptha. There are some crystals forming on the jars but VERY VERY few. After pouring that jar off Swim did notice that there was a strange yellow residue left inside the jar after the remaining naptha evaporated that smelled like what the spice has been described to smell like (synthetic, plastic)... But this residue was very hard to scrape off and still did not amount to much at all. Swim is very disheartened by this failure and hopes that someone may be able to offer some advice on what he could do with this to salvage something out of it? Swim still has the lye/MHRB water and all the collected solvent in the freezer. There's obviously SOMETHING in it, just how to get it out... Maybe the freezer isn't cold enough?

SWIY should evaporate 3/4 of his naphta with a small fan (PC fan for example - outside of course) and then put it in the freezer. He will enjoy what will happend 
SWIY could also do some more pulls of naphta from his lye soup. The trick is that if DMT is not enough concentrated in the polar solvent, it will hardly crystalize.

That's fine for a ball park figure, but its really a crap shoot on how much would be optimal without knowing the alkaloid content of your bark. I weighed towards more rather than less because its better to have to evap your naptha down some than to leave the goods behind.
Swim wanted to tell you all that it was a great success. First jar that was evapped down is forming many, many pure white crystals. Thanks a whole bunch, you've been really helpful Swim had one more general question, since his crystals are pure white... Is the ammonia wash necessary? Swim is having trouble finding non-sudsy ammonia.
