Faster extraction resulting in cleaner product?

Hey folks!

SWIM recently noticed that when he does his extraction procedure very quick with only little waiting time in between the steps it results in a cleaner product. SWIMs guess is that it might have to do something with more and more unwanted stuff from the bark is entering the aqueous solution when it is left alone for a longer period.

Once SWIM did an extraction and was very lazy only doing a pull per day or so. The resulting product was much more of a yellow color than the stuff which resulted from the pulls all being done within an hour or so right after the bark soaking period was over.

SWIM just finished his first extraction and noticed that the end result was certainly more of a yellow color.. SWIM is sure that next time it will take a lot less time now being more familiar w/ the process. That being said, SWIM followed Marsofolds tek for the most part except for the part where SWIM did 3 100 ml naptha pulls instead of 1 300 ml pull. SWIM let each pull sit in the jug for 5 - 6 hours. This begs SWIM to ask the question, how long should each pull sit in the jug? SWIM would be so happy if SWIM didnt have to wait at least 4 hours in between pulls and knowing that it wouldnt affect yields!

SWIM always does 4 pulls.. the 4th pull SWIM leaves in there overnight, agitating every now & then. The 4th pulls SWIM always collects in a different jar because the 4th pull always seems to be less clean. After the 4th pull is done SWIM starts doing another 4 pulls with toluene to get the jungle spice.

dictator - you need to agitate 3 times per pull and wait for it to merge at the top after each agitation.. SWIM found this process takes about 15-20mins per pull.

That's great to know! So there is really no need to let each pull sit for 4 hours? Even if i let each pull sit for 2 hours, that will make SWIMs life a lot easier! :) Thanks for the tip!

Benzyme, how long do you let your pulls sit for?

There's no need to let a pull sit for so long unless you have emulsions. Most of what can be pulled out will have been pulled out at the moment of separation, and the amount that is pulled is only determined by the amount of naphtha and how well it was mixed. The only step in the extraction process I know of that needs to sit for long is acid or STB extraction from the plant matter.

I find that less than half a minute of good vigorous shaking in a high volume container (like an HDPE jug) with small amounts of NPS (50ml, I suppose) does the trick, as long as you have a bottle neck or separatory funnel to retrieve it from. Also, the less water you have to pull from, the better; no need to trap your spice in a watery prison.

If you want to know how effective your technique is, just stick the pulls in the freezer while you carry on doing more pulls (preferably in progressively smaller amounts), and you should see the resulting saturation between half an hour and an hour. It's also a good idea to shake it for longer as you attempt more pulls.
