Some Shakti... Mahavishnu John is tapping into some cosmic forces on this one as are the two percussionists, this is a very deep and dense conversation between maestros.

Two thumbs up for Shakti. Got a chance to see them twice on the Remember Shakti tours... VERY incredible. Music on another level for sure.

As for Ozric recommendations, it is hard to go wrong.

I really dig the full instrumental stuff of course with Jon and his array of flutes and whatnot, but the new Oz is also wicked... if not more Shpongley than they were to start.

Spice Doubt
Afterswish
Jurassic Shift

are sick discs... Swirly Termination is cool. And how can you not love an album called
Spirals In Hyperspace.

Oz is one of those bands that you just have to suck up all there is. You will develop your favorite period and whatever, but those cats are locked in to modern psychedelic music like no other. Very good people.

Here are my favorite ozric cds that i would consider most epic, and not to be missed out on.

This is no particular order, because they are each fully awesome in their own different way.

Curious Corn (probably #1 favorite)
Paper Monkeys (it takes time to FULLY sink in, but is so ahead of its time and evolved. A must have)
Waterfall Cities (pure magic from start to finish clearly one of the best)
Erpland (one of the original classics that put Ozrics on the map, contains some of the best)
Yum Yum Tree (last one before paper monkeys, one of my favorites, because i love the "magical forest" fruity vibe of it and the vision it creates in my head is beautiful)

Those are my faves of all time, Take a good strong trip to any one of those cd's and youll see.

THanks hyperspace for giving a shout to the ozrics! cheers brother

Awesome, thanks for the recommendations space brothers :) I like my Shpongle so will check out those later albums, thanks Hyperspace, rad that you got to see Remembering Shakti, keep the psychedelic tunes coming!

my fav psychedelic music comes from the beats music scene, particularly local.
for those who're unfamiliar with that sort of music, it really made its presence in the summer of 2008, and is a global phenomenon. while commonly associated with dubstep, it is not dubstep at all. it nods to the beatmakers like james dewitt yancey, christopher edwin martin, and tadd mullinix. Steven Ellison is a very familiar and highly acclaimed beats artist. this subterranean form of music is also called wonk, grime, and street bass. you'll hear it in bump music on adult swim, and may hear it in another five years on commercials because corporations are slow like that. by then, it will have evolved into something else

While I have actually heard some of this music... you may want to put a link for some others to get a taste. ;-) Even a soundcloud link. Here, I will do it for you.

BTW I think most of this music is called WONKY lately, as it is somewhat different than the grime subgenre of dubstep. Beats is too nebulous a term, and there are already larger styles of music that have narrower names in this field (broken beats, breakbeats etc.) Personally, I see the plethora of names for styles that not only are not very different from each other, but are often just endless remixes of the same set of samples, a bit of hubris when you think of how many very different kinds of music the normal genre names include (rock, jazz, soul etc.)

I will say that I do like this music. A lot actually. It does tend to be music that is made rather quickly from producer packs on fruity loops and doesn't have much to distinguish it from one producer to another... but it does WOBBLE. :)

If I'm not incorrect, I think this music developed out of some heavy disso scenes... particularly DXM cough syrup slurping party heads. (unlike many here, I have no negative perspective on dissos in general & DXM in particular)

I assume, this is what you are talking about?

hmm..maybe

I forgot to mention... chiptune.
a lot of the wonk beats feature SID chip sounds, reminiscent of the ol' C64.
[YOUTUBE]

others are obviously more psychedelic influenced (flying lotus supposedly did dmt
for a week straight before recording Los Angeles)

[YOUTUBE]

the common theme is the off-kilter beats, the swing function on the MPC sampler, and wavy synths. wobbly basslines are optional
you're right, though...much of this genre takes bits of various forms of music..jazz, classical, world-beat, nintendo.

here are some local artists

Interesting ben

I know a lot of chiptune and grime, and a lot of this wonky stuff as well. All very interesting and courageous for producers of trad. electro beats. Making dance music that many people have trouble dancing to is a risk.

When you mentioned Steven Ellison, I wasn't sure if you were talking about Flying Lotus, I was thinking you may be talking about a different cat, as I know FlyLo from his pre wonk days. But it seems it is him. He has really gone off in a new direction and that is very cool in my book.

Maybe you saw, he did a track with Erykah Badu. I am not sure what I think of it yet, but as I like both FlyLo and Badu, I am sure it will grow on me. I wish I could hear more from this collab.

I just had a sweet trip listening to Jeff Beck Wired on vinyl. Highly recommended.

Great disc. Blow By Blow is basically the sister album and you should get that immediately if you don't already have it.

Also, go see Jeff live if he comes around your neck of the woods. He has had this amazing young female bass player in his band for some time now, and she is a sick pup... Tal Wilkenfeld.

last night's selection was the album "Afro Blue" by Dr. Lonnie Smith... kind of a Coltrane tribute... figured Lonnie's B3 would work out just fine... & it worked out just fine indeed...

Nice. The turbanator himself.

(He wears a groovy turban for those who don't know)

He has a number of great albums actually... His Jimi Hendrix tribute is also very cool.

I have an album of his from a side project called Crash that is really smoking. IMO the best thing he has done in recent memory. The album is called "The Dr. Is In" and it could easily have been a Dr. Lonnie Smith release. Recorded live and grooving super hard.
