Filtering Powdered Bark....

Migrated topic.

SWIM did an extraction(Mars) and, although his yield was weak( 3.2 on the Kilo after wash), it came out nice, white crystals.
Swim plans on another extraction, but has some Q's....
What's the best way to strain powdered bark after first polar extract? Powder/vinegar/water, then heat, then strain, then the rest of water/vinegar(and powder) back into crock for 2nd heat.
A tee-shirt had been suggested, but that clogs soooo fast...
Can you do first polar extraction, let it cool down from crock, and pour into vessel for decanting, then pour off water, put sediment back into crock with the rest of water/vinegar, heat, rest, decant, combine both water/vinegar solutions to then continue with the extraction, ie: add lye, etc.
Or, does the vinegar/water solution need to be kept hot whilst separating from the powder?
SWIM appreciates any suggestions...
Thankx,
Peace

I suggest avoid making a mess, don't squeeze it-out, just let it settle, then decant the liquid through a funnel-with-filter and leave the sludge behind ! The next 2 cookings will stir it up again and solubilize all the dmt remaining. After the last time you acid-cook, you can keep pouring off liquid through a filter, draining it all and then just throw-out the sludge. 99% of the dmt was in the acid-water that passed through the filter.

Considering the 0.32% yeild, assuming it was good MHRB - maybe it wasn't acid enough..? Where did it all go - is it still in the basified stuff...? Did you 'pulverize' the MHRB, or was it chunky..? How does it rate on the hyperspace-ability scale..?

When doing an acid-soak on MHRB, I feel it's better to aim for the lower end of the pH range for keeping dmt soluble - 2.0 pH instead of 4.0. Only 2 acid soaks at pH 2.0 will get all the dmt out, and heating is optional ! Dmt degrades very slowly at acid pH, so I say aim for 2.0 and skip heating.

Dmt will be instantly soluble and 'safer' in water if there are more H+'s around (ie more acid)- at pH 2.0 it's guaranteed to become water soluble the instant it leaves the bark. At a pH of 4.0 there are 100 times less H+'s around - so is this pH therefore 100 times 'slower' at solubilizing dmt?, and I wonder if this can affect yeild...?

No PH taken; however, the Mars was followed to the T...1 quart vinegar to 3 quarts water...
And your right...SWIM made quite a mess..
After the final squeeze, lots of white specks were seen in the fine powder ball...SWIM thinks the 2nd polar extraction wasn't high enough PH, as not much water was taken out of the first pull. Pouring from crock pot was very difficult, and t-shirt clogged fast. Moved shirt over a little, and continued pouring...not very effective....
So the water must remain warm when pouring off?
The pwodered bark was good quality, just pilot error!
Swim was very happy for his first time extracting...Crystals were very active at 30-50mg's!
He is looking to increase his yield, and these wre some of the problems he had.
Thankx,
Peace

Wooo HoooO! Practice makes perfect !

If the water is acid enough the dmt stays in solution, it should be no problem if it cools a bit to filter or if you chill the stuff. It sounds strange to see crystals in the soaked-bark, what is that !?

But instead of a shirt, just get a funnel ! One can use a large funnel and fliter-cone (coffee filters may not be fine enough, try Whatman brand filter papers ( http://www.whatman.com/QuantitativeFilterPapersAshlessGrades.aspx ).

In the sink, slowly pour off the acid-solution once it has settled, and let it percolate through the filter at whatever pace it goes - it can be slow (8 Hrs) or quick (40 min), but if you let gravity do the work, there's no need to 'squeeze' or fondle the gunk, and it can be made crystal clear with one or two passes!

I've been thinking on this one, and I suggested this to SWIM, he agrees..

Industrial filter cones...used to filter hot oil....box of 50, about $25 including shipping online. He'd only need a few, and I could lend him my filter-holder (that I just found)..
Prolly could find them at a restaurant supply house and save ship cost...
They would hold enough liquid, although he might have to use 2 due to clogging....
Whatya think??
Peace

I love the results of good filtering - crystal clear burgandy trypatmine wine! 'Clogging' in the filter is just relative to how patient you are. If it drips through in 12 hours, it seems quite 'clogged', but still you'll get perfectly filtered stuff, one drop at a time. If it flows through in 40 minutes it can be still cloudy, and in need of a chill and another pass through a clean filter.
