First Time DMT Smoke Problems?

Hello people of DMT-Nexus (I hope that this is the correct board to post this kind of message on...). I have never taken drugs (or any mind-altering substances) before yet am still setting out to eventually try DMT, LSD, and psilocybin mushrooms. I am taking this journey because I want to have the experiences and learn about the human psyche as well as better understand the inner workings of the human brain. This can be classified as a personal research project. I aim to take DMT first as it is the shortest trip and have done many hours of research on the subject; it is the kind of things that piques my interest. The only bane to my plan is that I have never smoked any substance before and fear than I may lose some of the drug's potency if coughing is induced by not only smoke in my lungs for the first time, but of its harsh nature as well. Generally, I would want take DMT via smoking as I have read it is more powerful that way. Would you say that I have anything to worry about? Thanks.

In my experience DMT pretty much shows things that are impossible to truely understand, but good luck to you.

There are many things to learn about, especially proper vaporization technique before trying to "journey" with DMT.

DMT vapor is very smooth if vaporized at proper temperature with glass vapor genie for example. I am tired of hearing everywhere(wikipedia included) that DMT is harsh for the lungs... Of course it is if one applies too much heat!

As for smoalking DMT: You do not actually smoke it like you'd do with tobacco or weed. You vaporize the DMT and inhale those vapors. Most people refer to it as smoking or smoalking because it's easier to say / type / pronounce and everyone knows what they mean. You can smoke changa though, which is a mixture of herbs and DMT sometimes combined with a MAOI. Smoking changa is apparently easier and can be done from a joint, pipe or bong.

The vaporized DMT can be harsh on your lungs but doesn't need to be. It all depends on your extraction technique, if you washed the spice or not and how good your vaporizing technique is. Burnt DMT is incredibly harsh on your lungs. But with a little bit of practice you won't have that problem, just requires some training and trial-and-error.

As for the effects: Yes, coughing will reduce the efficiency of the inhaled vapor because the longer you hold down the vapors, the more your body can absorb. But don't worry about that because it will making the urge to cough worse and the vapors aren't that harsh on your lungs(unless you burn the DMT but I've found it's difficult to burn the DMT if you apply the heat properly). It's a matter of mental willpower: Inhale the vapor and remind yourself why you are inhaling it and that you can withstand the urge to cough.

like tele said, if vapourised properly there is no real harshness to the DMT, i find it has a distinct taste to it but you should fine.

i wouldnt let this be your main reason for doing DMT first. I did LSD and mushrooms lots of times both at high doses and these experiences, although quite long in duration, came and went without much incident except lots of fun.

however DMT has changed my perception and relationship with "reality". It not the length of time its what the molecule does with it that needs to be considered. My advice would be to start with a low dose of mushrooms and go from there.

DMT is short in duration but very very very high in content.

I think DMT is about the last thing you should ever wanna take. Not the first.

I think DMT is about the last thing you should ever wanna take. Not the first.

And I think the opposite. Considering it's short nature and ease of dosing it's definately my recommendation for first psychedelic drug. If things get too intense or one doesn't like it, it will be over soon. I don't even think one should get familiar with weed or other mind altering substances before it. But one should definately research properly about it before trying it!
There are some threads about the first psychedelic drug on DMT nexus.

Also the nature of for example mushroom trip and DMT trip is in my experience very different as the mushroom can alter your thoughts and make you behave like you normally wouldn't, but with DMT the thoughts are clear and behaviour is normal(if you feel your body:lol: ). Therefore I don't know how it would benefit to prepare for DMT, or getting your feet wet. Even if you see hallucinations it's a different experience.

Honestly the best advice I can give you is, be patient. Not every DMT trip is going to be the most amazing and intense one that you have had. Just keep an open mind and experiment around with techniques of administration and so forth. It it a matter of trial and error.

To answer your question: No, there is nothing wrong with trying DMT first and if you extract enough, you can try again if you cough it up (could very well happen).

I think most will agree that the harshness of the vapor is a function of the technique--virtually always overheating (and it's not smoke--well, perhaps sometimes it IS, and that's one basis for the harshness). Proper vaporization is ideal. A majority of nexians agree that the glass vapor genie (sherlock version) provides the easiest method for inhaling the least harsh vapor to the greatest effect. Some would add that a tall bong--where some quantity of vapor can be "stored" before inhalation (and where vapor/air is cooled by passing through water) also makes for minimal harshness--perhaps most ideally when combined with a somewhat benign leaf (also vaporized, not smoked), such as white lotus, mullein, lavender, etc.

The entire trick to maximal experiences with minimal discomfort is proper technique--avoiding overheating and getting the required dose in one or two (or at most three) breaths...and successfully holding each breath long enough to maximize absorption.

I think he is just saying the act of smoking might be difficult. I have introduced many people to "smoking" whether it be cigarettes or cannabis and so on. And they seem to all have to same problem of inhaling the smoke. It is very different from breathing. Like Kobranek said a lot of us on here are regular smokers and brush aside this problem.

I would say if you really need to practice smoking don't use cannabis, especially sense you never smoked it before. Get some nice smooth herbs to get the technique down. But you could always just wing it and see how you do, it might not be a problem.

Much thanks to everyone for their quick replies; it has shed more light on the subject than I originally expected when I initially submitted my post. I suppose I was being foolish when I considered the DMT vapor to be smoke, to make excuses I probably should have looked more into the vectors of absorption for the substance rather than be ignorant.

I suppose I might have to deal with wasting a few inhalations due to my inexperience, though from what I'm reading here, that won't be a terribly bad thing.

Possibly unlike other people, I have a clearly defined reason for taking psychedelics. As a scientist and researcher, my goal is to attempt to understand the unexplained. One must embrace new unanswered questions and ponderings before trying to theorize about the subject at hand. To this end, all of my trials will be personally documented as I want an experience rather than a quick dose to whet an appetite.

As I stated before, I greatly appreciate the replies and will welcome any new advice on the subject that one might want to give.

^ I agree that vaporizing is alot smoother on the lungs than smoking. The point I failed to make is that one must obtain a certain technique regardless of smoking or vaporizing. Depending on the material the variables such as density, temperature, heating method, device used all come into play.

My top 3 would be Ayahuasca, Peyote, Lysergic Acid Amides (&LSD), I havent tried Ibogain, and I've had it up to hear with shrooms but we have an understanding. Anyway its like you say, don't smoke it - drink Ayahuasca, even better than snuffing it. It is not smoke, its vapor, but you don't know what you're getting most of the time, since its made with chemicals and can have residuals which may turn into actual smoke. Just keep it food grade/eco friendly if you must extract. This is what I would suggest. There's a book called "drugs of the dreaming" which you might like as well. And the 3rd catagory, theorogens (I've covered Oneirogens and Entheogens) those things that make you a beast - maybe you can find a less damaging way of illumination this human side of the self without letting it rule you, then you'll get it.

edit:Well...how powerfull do you need it to be? J. Ott says with Ayahuasca the B-Carbolines compete with the DMT/5-MEO for the same receptor sites, to that I say - learn to snuff, as people here have said the food grade fumeric salt is much less damaging on your nasal membranes than a (potentially toxic) freebase would be on the lungs - even if it is only vapor.
