I don't remember a reference to btc in this thread but my memory's never to be trusted. The only btc I can think of is for Bitcoin. I reference it that way. Just didn't recall doing it here..

Ah, the difference is I had chemistry books instead of friends when I was a kid.

Strong, aqueous, protic acids donate a proton to water molecules so the main body of the acid already exists as its conjugate base! The NIST thing only gives water as an option because that's the extent of the data they have.

Yeah, well consider yourself lucky. I went to the MyRSC web (Royal Society of Chem) which is a pretty stuffy place. But they have great links to free learning modules in all areas of O Chem and at all levels. There's even quick quizzes you can take so they can recommend modules that are based on your current knowledge. I was humiliated, of course. If I'm being generous, I'm at about the same level as a 14 year old. But that is a Brit 14 year-old so maybe it's a compliment?

Did you notice NIST uses H3 and not H4 for fumaric? I traced their reference data back. You were right - they had just the one data point. Why create a whole page/link for that? And why is experimental data necessary? Thought things were simpler than that. They never are.

Acids and bases are simple compared to the molecules in the functional groups. But there's a Synthesis Explorer that predicts what happens when you start throwing them together. I'm out of town using a tablet and for some reason can't interact with it (Java runtime required?) I came across it just before I left and it worked fine when accessed from my desktop. It's probably considered old technology by now. Not very flashy but still impressive.

Maybe I should just go back to brewing beer. Enzymes chomp long carbs into simple sugar to feed yeast that crap alcohol and die in their own waste. Now that's not only understandable. It's downright poetic.

Some 14-year-olds might be quite good at chemistry but they are few and far between. I grew up in Britain and can safely say they was a real anti-nerd sentiment at the time, at least where I lived.

I've read that even fine shreds of bark to just let it sit for many weeks in a good lye water, and (all?) wood gets broken down to a mud. Saves the efforts of powdering. Why not 2 months?

Glass is generally preferred but for this phase (without a solvent!!) I think a HDPE container is suited, because I've also heard of potential lye stress on glass.
Just before processing with a solvent, poor it over it in a glass vessel.
I've not done this procedure yet, but planning to when the time calls.

Hey Jees! Don't even know if you'll be back to see this since you posted so long ago - I just noticed it. I never heard of a lye/glass stress. Not doubting you but about the HDPE: I obtained a polyethylene vessel a about a year ago that was made for withstanding higher PSI than most - up to 150 and I had heard that was conservative. When it arrived, it said 2 things could adversely effect the PSI rating. They are temperature above normal (25C I suppose) and alkaline contents. Hydrocarbons are no problem according to Chem compatibility sites I've checked. I know we're not doing anything under pressure but there may also be some HDPE interaction with lye as well as glass. But I never saw anything bad happen. I've gone up to 150 PSI at slightly over 25C and nothing blew up with the vessel containing a solution of about Ph=13. I had a pressure guage attached to a port so I'm giving an accurate measurement here.

The second comment about leaving plant material to soak. Very interested in this... been reading a bit and don't get a few things. First, I did come across folks wanting more delicate things extracted like proteins and amino acids etc and they had to be cautious not to promote hydrolysis. We're not interested in that stuff but the alkaloids will undergo the same fate eventually. What I'm asking is: would the DMT be destroyed by hydrolysis (sounds like it would) and if so,how long would it take?

Not really looking for a technical explanation.just anecdotal evidence of someone who did a 24+ hour soak at high Ph and without effect on anticipated yields. Do you know if anyone's done that. I'd like to be able to do a longer soak. Not just to break down the junk (mainly tannins. I'm guessing) but also because I could get a decent night's sleep if I start late and finish up the next day.

Yeah.I'm curious too. And no cheating. Try RSC Learning Modules. You filter by interest and all the stuff they have is returned. But at the top of the module touch select, there's the option to be quizzed. Don't think you need to join RSC to use them but if you do it's really no big deal. Lemme know how it goes.

So, the quizzes are distributed among all the topics? I was hoping for some overarching, easy-to-find, test your chemistry knowledge ultra-quiz! I'm quite certain I know more than the average 14-year-old, however.

Mike you seem like a fellow traveler. I am also 60 and from 1971-1979 I did every drug that I could get my hands on. Did the fabled orange sunshine and Mr. Natural blotter hundreds of times. I was also fortunate enough to try Mescaline and when I lived in New Orleans at the Head Inn it was our habit to tramp the fields looking for cubensis that would pop up.
I had itchy feet and wanted to travel so I was talking with one of my coworkers and he was like "Join the Military they will pay you to travel." To make a long story short I spent 20 years in the Navy and stepped foot in 69 countries. Had plenty of adventures, became an athlete ,sydiver, scuba diver, triathlete loved a wonderful woman for the last 37 years to this day.
I was planning on being on a beach in Thailand right now but life has a way of disregarding your plans. I developed a degenerative nervous system disorder that has been very trying to say the least. Someone had given me some mushrooms and I put them in a lock box and ten years later when I needed them they were there. I ate apx 1/8 ounce and had a very healing trip coming to grips with my departure from this plane of existence in the not too distant future. I will not say it was pleasant but it was what I needed right then.
I joined this group in Feb of 16 and feel like I am ready to take the next step now.

Ah, yes I was. Just didn't recall mentioning it and like I said, my memory is anything but long-term (I.e. if it's more than an hour ago it's all new to me) . I had some cash being transferred into Coinbase from my bank when I made that comment. The cash had left my bank but Coinbase held it in some status like "processing" for a week. So it couldn't even be put in a wallet much less sent to a more secure offline wallet. And Coinbase was saying they ere not going to credit anyone with a piece of the new currency. So if say, Bitcoin's value dropped by half to support an even split, it would not have been a good idea to be holding Bitcoin at Coinbase. Moving it to a cash account at Coinbase would be okay. Getting it all offline would be even better. But it all worked out okay and the sky didn't fall.

Were you holdind Bcoin at the time? I don't think the blockchain split and new currency had much effect.... WTF!!! I hadn't really been paying attention since that all happened and just now took a look. A Bitcoin is going for $4265. What's going on? I'm not unhappy - very much the opposite. But last time I looked it was somewhere between $2450 & $2700. What happened?

That web makes you really appreciate everything about this one. For sure.

The modules are pretty good and it's nice that they have a little variety in their formats. But I have the same feeling about their organization as you. I went their looking for a more linear approach to my education. But once youcre older than 12, the modules seem to go all piecemeal. Their beginning chemistry stuff for first timer kids leads the student down a nice orderly path. But that stops about right after balancing equations and well before A/B reactions & extractions.

When you join using online registration you are only halfway there. You get an email telling you to send an email to some admin address and request full admittance. Just so you know - it's a little strange. I sent a brief email making the request and was granted full access in under 24 hours. But a few days later my email comes back to me as undeliverable. So go figure.

Well Ananda7519, I suppose I'm about as close as you'll find here for fellow traveling. About the same age, history of acid back in the day and then life taking a not so welcome turn. And if I'm hearing correctly, you haven't tried DMT yet either. Correct? But we're here for different reasons. I stumbled across this place by accident. I mean. I really was trying to figure out what steps to take that would lead me to a less depressive and more purposeful path. But that had nothing to do with me coming here. I came by way of a nearly random Google link on a search having nothing to do with drugs, growth or mental health and well-being. I'm not really some woo-woo spiritualist but I did take it as a sort of sign.

Anyway, I'm hear for healing and it sounds like you're hear for acceptance. So let's travel together even knowing our paths will split. And if we're lucky, we'll both find at least a piece of what we're looking for.

I'm getting home early next week and am hoping to be greeted by some organic material. If all goes well and I wind up having tried before you, I'll give you a heads up. And you do the same for me. Deal?

I haven't tripped hard for quite a while and this is said to be an entirely different thing from acid. 'Shrooms or mesc. I'm glad for that but I can't say I'm looking enthusiastically forward to it either. I mean, this will be my first time I trip without doing it because I just want to trip. You know what I mean? I guess I'm more comfortable and familiar with self-gratification than with healing and growth. A not so small part of my problem.

Do you have any idea when you'll be taking the leap?

I live in a very small town in Northern Montana about fifty miles from the Canadien border. I have had to order pretty much everything online. I should have everything I need in the next week so if the chemistry gods smile down upon me hopefully in ten days to two weeks. I had heard about DMT back in the pre digital age but the gist of what I heard was that it was a super psychedelic that would give you a very powerful trip that was over in fifteen to twenty minutes.
If I would have had the opportunity I am sure I would have given it a shot. The universe must have had other plans. I am sure I will get a lot more out of it now then back in the day.I have been a Buddhist for about five years and have been meditating daily. I have also done some ten-day silent meditation retreats and after a few days of meditating 8-10 hours a day you begin to see how beautiful everything is colors are brighter, you see more details than normal. The train of thought pulls into the station and you can go a long period without "thinking" until you need to think about something.
I have also done some Lucid dreaming work which is very fun and interesting. From the pics you posted it looks like you live in Florida? I spent ten years there on and off during my time in the military.
