I just posted on the "Women & Respect" thread about this topic, and SB suggested I create a new thread, so here goes.
I've been thinking of starting a similar thread regarding homosexuals at the Nexus. There's a good deal of connection between homosexuality - or to be more inclusive let's say non-heterosexuality - and the procreation of spiritual and mystical traditions - for example, the "two-spirited" people in Native American traditions, Rumi, Walt Whitman, and the list goes on. About a year ago I came across a convincing argument from (I believe) religious 'scholar' Jeffrey Kripal to the effect that non-heterosexuality is at least in part an evolutionary trait that's come about to preserve not only cultural norms but that also allows a significant minority of the population to devote themselves to spiritual/mystical paths without being biologically distracted with creating or supporting a family. Homosexuality, in this view, far from a "sinful" way of being, is in fact essential to the preservation of the religious and spiritual life in society.
All of this leads me to suspect that a solid minority of Nexus members are either females or non-heterosexual males; those who devote themselves to the exploration of Hyperspace and/or their own minds probably belong, more often than not, to a "spiritual/religious/cultural reproducer" category. I hope to get some data with a poll, and also hope to get some other perspectives on the issue. Anyone here have any thoughts?
Edit: also does anyone know how I can create a poll? The search engine yielded no help...
