Importance of Ayahuasca Diet

How important is the suggested diet for an ayahuasca session (pre or prior to)?

I have heard completely different opinions on the subject, and its hard to get anything concrete on the matter.

Agreed with soulfood. Many on the Nexus have no problems at all with their normal diet and aya. A few I have seen post that they do get headaches and increased nausea eating meats & dairy close to dosing or while the dose remains active. I seem to recall Fractal Enchantment outlining his process as empty stomach -> dose -> eating a piece of buttered bread to get digestion going, which aligns with my own experience. Twice I've taken aya and felt like nothing had happened for a couple of hours, ate something and *whoosh*.

As far as I know, medical issues or health issues related to diet and ayahuasca are very very rare. Most Ayahuasca diets are more geared toward the spiritual side of the equation, a type of traning of intent for the experience to come.

I have spent the past 29 days on a STRICT Ayahuasca spiritual diet. If all goes well (the universe seems to have been postponing things), I should have a fascinating writeup to share with everyone in a day or two. Never before have I attempted something like this.

No salt, no spice, and no oil are supposed to straighten one's energy body, so the spirits can heal more easily, like the body becomes a still pond of water. During my experiment (during most of which I was temporarily homeless, hence the lack of Aya ceremonies), Changa seemed to hit me 3x as hard, and mushrooms transformed my visual processing in a way never experienced before--focus became impossible, peripherals expanded, everything became like a watercolor, and, yes, the trees talked. ;)

There are a lot of spiritual traditions that have interesting overlaps as far as diet and sensitivity is concerned.

If you want to explore going VERY DEEP, the dieta element will take you further.

However, a relatively clean diet (eat fresh whole foods the day of, and leave a few hours of digestion before drinking) will be perfectly fine. It normally takes a lot of willpower for me to stick to a restrictive diet and I didn't always do it, to no ill effect.

I can't say it enough... eat for your elves! Just respect the amazing creation that you are... treating yourself with love and respect goes a long way. :) Don't get hammered and eat 19 bags of Cheetos right before drinking... that's not good for the elves, anyway, if you know what I mean. ;)

Pork seems to give some people horrifying visions. That's just the word on the street.

The act of dieting in itself is a form of self control, self conditioning, self discipline, and can be a good thing for you mentally, spiritually, and physically. This can put you in a better frame of mind, making you more prepared for the ayahuasca experience. But other than that, I don’t believe it’s needed.

SWIM eats aged cheese all the time, drinks coffee, etc., and he’ll do so before, during, and after the effects of ayahuasca/pharmahuasca/etc., and he has never experienced any problems at all.

The best thing I can recommend is mentally preconditioning yourself for the experience. Be in a mind set that is beneficial to the experience before entering it. If you are stressed out, exhausted, or suffering some other unpleasant emotional or physical ailments, no matter how minor, it’s probably better to wait until those things pass before taking ayahuasca. Such things can manifest themselves in the ayahuasca experience as uncomfortable visions, nervousness, anxiety, etc., and even cause unwanted bodily side effects to be felt.

Keep in mind that some drugs will interact badly with the effects of ayahuasca. The harmala alkaloids in ayahuasca are vasodilators, and so drinking alcohol can badly interact with it causing extreme vasodilation and this can produce pounding headaches in some people. So it’s best to be clean of other drugs before taking ayahuasca. The MAOI effects of B. caapi are probably the least of your worries, because they are very weak, and short acting. I have never heard of MAOI poisoning being associated with ayahuasca. It’s the drug effects of the harmala alkaloids that are the thing to really be concerned about.

The harmala alkaloids are heavy duty drugs, and they interact in strange ways with other drugs, not so much from their weak MAOI effects, but because of their general drug effects. They tend to amplify and alter the psychoactive effects of other drugs. They themselves are powerful mind altering drugs. While their MAOI effects are needed to activate DMT orally, it’s their psychoactive effects that really alter the DMT experience. They lengthen the experience, give the visions much more meaningful content, they reduce the anxiety of DMT, etc. They sort of keep DMT in check so to speak. They can react in very bazaar ways with other psychoactives though (like alcohol). So it’s a good idea to be clean of other drugs before taking ayahuasca, or you could end up having a heart attack, headaches, extreme anxiety, or any number of other unusual drugs interactions. So beware of that.

Here's what happened to SWIM without the diet in short...

SWIM takes some Aya.
SWIM noticed being in fetal position on the couch.
SWIM remembers stomach pain and overall uneasiness which was barely bearable for the duration.
SWIM knocks out for the remaining duration.
SWIM didn't bring back much after coming home.

Hope this helps.

Dreamer found that he got headache if alcohol and THH was used aroud the same day. He must be clean of one or another before considering dosing.

I think I can rest easier now.

I will have this ceremony sometime late in June, and will make sure to try and not eat total shit beforehand (which I don't usually do anyways). I'll let you guys know how it is.
