Interesting criticism of rue teks

I've never extracted Syrian rue, but I thought I would contribute by posting a copy of my saved teks and was surprised by this criticism:

Those guides highlight what not to do. Crushing seeds, multiple boils, v shaped funnels, filtering nightmares, decanting difficulties.

Southernlights Rue Tek

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This tek will remove the vasicine and vasicinone from the final product, leaving only harmine and harmaline.

Rue extract stains everything if not cleaned up immediately. You may want a plastic tablecloth on your bench.

This tek can be scaled as needed. I've done it with as much as a kilo of rue in one cook in an 8L pressure cooker. Yields should be around %4-5 depending on starting material quality. Don't stress too much about the quantities/volumes. If you can make it all fit comfortably into 1 large jar just work around that, or use 2 or more jars as needed.

Don't chuck out your seed bag till you have your product. Some extractions I have got all of it on the first cook, sometimes I have had to do a second. Something to do with how dry the seeds are or some other variable effects this. I do not know what it is though.

That also means you also assume a working volume all the way through. How much volume of x do you need? How much goes in the vessel you are using? ;)

Be aware that this extraction takes days to perform. You can't rush it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Required:

syrian rue seeds
old long sleeve cotton shirt, thicker quality
cable ties
white vinegar
sodium carbonate (washing soda)
salt (not iodized)
water
paper kitchen towel
coffee filters
length of aquarium pipe taped to a stick at one end (chopstick works great)
a big funnel (flat bottomed with a grille is best)
large glass jars or beakers
pressure cooker
smaller pot
thick rubber gloves (optional)

Method:

* Rinse seeds in a sieve to get excess dust and dirt off.

* Cut a sleeve off your cotton shirt. Tie 2 or 3 cable ties close to each other close to the hand end of the sleeve. Put your seeds into your sleeve tube. Tie off your sleeve with another 2 or 3 cable ties but leave an extra 30% space empty for the seeds to swell. Now you should have a rue sausage. Cut the dangly bit off the end of your sausage leaving maybe 10-15cm.

* Fill pressure cooker with desired water amount. Total volume in cooker should be no more than 50% including your sausage and should cover your sausage.

* Add a nice big dash of vinegar to the pot and pressure cook for 120 minutes @ 15psi

* Vent the cooker and let it cool a bit. Squeeze sausage so no more liquid comes out, use rubber gloves so you don't get burned or just let it cool to handling temperature beforehand. Remove sausage. Be aware that this liquid will stain everything it touches. If you are happy with the volume proceed to next step, or reduce gently over heat. 1-2L is a good volume for 100g-250g of seeds.

* Fold a paper towel into quarters and put in funnel. Filter solution through funnel into your jar/s x2. When the towel becomes clogged dispose of and use a new one. Patience.

* Now refilter with coffee filters in the same manner x3

* Add sodium carbonate by the spoonful to your solution in the jar, stir to dissolve. The solution will turn from dark transparent yellow to straight up milk looking when you have added enough, wait for the solution to flocculate, it will start to settle quickly and look like this picture.

* Let the alkaloids to settle and the reaction to complete. Be patient. You'll want to let this rest at least a few hours but preferably overnight.

* Decant the vast majority of the basic solution. To do this put your jar on the draining board and use your pipe on a stick to syphon off the solution down the drain. Avoid sucking alkaloids out.

* Add some hot vinegar, about 200ml per 100g of starting material, and stir until all of your alkaloids have dissolved.

* Filter through a coffee filter in a funnel x2. Replace filter as required.

* (optional) double the solution volume with water, if you want prettier crystals. You can just add a little more water here if you like.

* Heat solution (don't boil) in pot and then add 10g of salt per 100ml of solution, stir until dissolved. You can leave in pot or decant back into a jar to watch the magic.

* Allow the solution to cool to room temperature. Crystal structures will appear through the solution. Then place in fridge until cold to complete the reaction.

* Filter crystals out of solution with a coffee filter and put them back in pot. Dissolve in fresh hot water. Discard old solution.

* Filter solution back into jar and base with sodium carbonate till milky, stir... repeat whole process as above from the first base. You can do this additional times for increased purity.

* After basing the solution with sodium carbonate a final time just add plain water again after decanting, stir it thoroughly. Allow to settle for a long while and then decant, add water, stir, wait, decant, add water... keep doing this until the solution does not feel slippery between your fingers (it should be grippy like fresh water) and appears clear in the jar after being mixed with the alkaloids. This normally takes a few times.

* Decant as much remaining clear liquid as possible then swish the last bit of solution around so your harmalas are wet and pour into a coffee filter to drain. Once dried out a good bit peel the lump of alkaloids out of coffee filter.

* Spread your alkaloids in a glass dish to dry. Chop them up into chunks. This can take 2-3 days depending on the amount, or use a fan, or a fan forced oven on very low with the door cracked open to speed it up. (don't cook them! very short period required)

* Scrape and enjoy.

note: This is not new science. It's based on the Tao of Rue and is an amalgamation of techniques and methods I've read about, figured out and discovered in conversation. I learned the hard way so you don't have to. I've modified it multiple times and will continue to do so when/if I find better ways. ☮️

So how do you know? If you have never extracted Rue?
Boiling already-boiled seeds creates yellow water, not red water

Also I’ve noticed that you tend to start quite a few topics like this often with somewhat vague or disjointed thoughts, including numerous links, both to other people ideas and to various forums, which sometimes makes it harder to follow what you’re really trying to say.

I’d really encourage you to make more of an effort to clarify the point you want to make, so the discussion can actually go somewhere. Right now, it often feels like you’re simply filling the forum with content that doesn’t quite lead to anything.

It’s a shame, both in terms of your time and that of others. So, just take this as a friendly reflection.

And I just saw this thread:

If I had seen that thread before I made this one, I would have just made a comment in that one.
One could take this as a merge request, except it get unwieldy on account of the discussion in this thread.
