MAOI psychedelic effect questions

Hey guys
So I wanted to post this in the ayahausca section, but I don't have enough posts yet.

I was wondering if anyone knew of the scientific reason of why MAOI's cause psychedelic experiences.

If MAO is inhibited in the body, could that mean that endogenous DMT levels would be higher even without administering DMT- thus creating the psychedelic effect?

I ask because I had a second aya session lately and the experience felt and tasted vastly different from the first. Many people did not feel much on one cup, and my visions and interactions with myself felt different. Is there a good guide that explains the differences between ratio's of DMT and MAOI in aya?

Thanks
Joe

If the psychedelic effects of harmalas could be attributed to their mao inhibition then pharmaceutical maois would also have psychedelic effects (which they don't).

I wonder though if there is a difference in how the body metabolizes synthetic vs. natural MAOIs. Perhaps it's a bit of a logical stretch, but food author Michael Pollan explains how there is a drastic difference between vitamins present in whole foods and vitamins present in pill form. Even in pharmaceutical grade vitamins that use naturally extracted vitamin compounds, it was found that the body simply doesn't process them in the same way. The point Pollan ultimately makes is that far more vitamin content is absorbed when the vitamins are delivered via whole foods.

If this is the case for MAOIs, then that might help explain nexalizer's situation.

Speaking of synthetics vs naturals, anyone who smoked spice (synthetic cannabis) during its heyday knows that there is a massive difference between the effects of synthesized THC versus that of naturally grown cannabis... Or was that just me?

I think you're on to something here.. It would make perfect sense that, with DMT being endogenous, all we really need as humans is a powerful enough MAOI inhibitor to perceive some level of psychedelic effect. "Psychedelic effect" in this context however might simply mean an improvement in mood.. Perhaps there is not enough endogenous DMT in the body to produce the kinds of effects that are typical of DMT and Aya experiences.

But then I start thinking about how many plants are known to contain DMT and the fact that ALL living things might contain trace amounts of DMT.. science is still working on that one but.. Is it possible that we could derive a psychedelic effect simply from eating natural foods?

I also recently heard an interview with Rick Strassman where he states that DMT is synthesized in the lungs- which, as he explains, has some interesting research potential when we consider how many traditional meditation and yogic practices focus on breathing as a key factor in transcendence.
