Mason jars

Heya all.

Just a really basic question here. I want to know which kind of Mason jars is most fit to work with Lye solutions. The problem i've been having with mine is that the little rubber band between the sealed lid starts to deteriorate and falls off. Leaving me with a leaking Mason jar.

So, i'm about to gather some new ones and i might just buy the same but i've also been thinking about a screw-on type Mason jar.

My only concern is though that this lid will burn from the corrosive solution in the jar.

Any tips are very much appreciated.

I have been using jars with the two piece lid and have not had any leaks yet. I bought a pack of 12 at walmart for not too much and they are perfect for me. I have noticed the seal around the cap is slightly discolored, will probably not last forever but should last a while.

I would suggest one with a screw on lid, because as that lid deteriorates it doesn't just disappear it enters the solution and I would be worried about plastics leaching into your solvent

3 Liter jars sound great. I think the closing is a little narrow but it can work. Too bad the nearest vendor of those winebottles is an ocean away from me.

I do fancy a good wine tho, maybe i will check the nearest liquor store for the world's most tasty DMT container.

That one looks good but i fear that the rubber band will get brown stuff over it and lose pressure, causing it to leak. Maybe i can use the screw-on version of those but then i fear maybe the lye will react on the materials of the lid.

Just saw someone use a plastic soda bottle with their solution

So i had to ask, can i just use a plastic soda bottle for STB extraction.?

I would avoid plastic completely with extractions that involve solvents and strong bases. You don't want even trace amounts of plastic ending up in your final product.

I'd recommend what I'm using. Go to family dollar. They have hdpe wide mouthed jugs. I'm using the gnarly big 3500ml but the come smaller. Use that for you're lye water plant and solvent solution. And the mason jars for when you seperate the top layer off. Then you'd be doing what I'm doing haha. And th hdpe juds are about $1.28 for the big one like I'm using. Hope that helps good sir!

Please don't use HDPE for organic solvents, as they are not rated or intended for such use. Phillips, the company that manufactures HDPE, states that they, "permeate excessively and cause package deformation."

According to Phillips, there are many household chemicals that will degrade HDPE, permeating it (passing through it), making it lose its strength, softening it, or making it become brittle and crack...

In addition to many individual chemicals (mentioned below), Phillips lists two major classes of chemicals that are not compatible with HDPE: aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons. The basic aromatic hydrocarbon is benzene (a major component of gasoline); others are toluene (also called methylbenzene), and the three xylenes (o-, m-and p-xylene). Others include naphthalene (moth balls), and pdichlorobenzene (also moth balls). These aromatic hydrocarbons "permeate excessively and cause package deformation," says Phillips.

Go with a1pha's advice. The wine bottles with the screw on metal caps work great. Wine bottles are typically pretty thick glass, and you can remove the plastic gasket in the cap. I've never had an issue with leaking, it seems to seal up fine this way. Then, you've only got glass and a little metal in contact with your fluids.

Plus, you get to empty a wine bottle somehow...:d

It's hard to state that authoritatively if you are not analyzing your results. How do you know there are no plasticizing agents present in your final product? Just because you don't see any holes/thinning/etc. in your container doesn't mean that it's remaining 100% intact.

I'm not saying that the health risks are necessarily greater than environmental toxins you encounter on a daily basis...just that most people have no way of knowing and I would rather not find out.

Well with my containers I replace them after every use since its $3 for 2 huge ones. And with my final product I always do 3 reX runs combining all the reX washes into one before starting another reX run so I'm not worried about anything but pure Nn being in my final product
