Noob STB Problem: Lime instead of Lye

Being a lazy man, SWIM tried Lazyman's tek with around 250gms of MHRB. Not having any lye available...this person soaked ground MHRB in water and edible lime and then added VM+P naptha. After considerable stirring...the naptha was sucked off the top using a syringe. It was then put in the freezer for 24 hrs...but no crystalization occured. A source of lye was then found...and added to the ground MHRB and lime mixture. Since then...the mixture has been allowed to sit overnight and naptha syringed off. Each time...the naptha has had a yellowish tinge...but....no crystalization in the freezer. Some oily stuff (maybe fat) did precipitate out to the bottom of the jar...but no crystals. Was irreversible damage done with the initial use of lime? Any thoughts about how someone might save this mangled tek or should someone just throw it out and buy some fresh MHRB and take it from the top?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
 
If you want a tek to work, you must follow the tek. Lime (CaOH) doesn't work on a STB.

You need to get the right materials to do an extraction correctly.

If your naphtha is yellow but no xtals are forming you have too much naphtha. Evap 1/2 of it then stick it back in the freezer.

You may want to switch to an A/B extraction as you are able to use weaker bases and still get decent yields.
 
I hear ya! :oops: Was trying to be creative in the absence of lye. Now I have lye....but it looks like I somehow ruined the MHRB. Do you think that if I acidified my bark soup and then added the lye and the nonpolar solvent I might be able to get something out of this batch of bark? I will evaporate down the material I am getting and try freeze precipitation again.

No I don't think anything is ruined. Keep everything. I do not suggest acidifing your STB...that would make a giant mess. Try evaping some of the solvent first.

Can you check the pH of your basified mimosa sludge?

Keep the naphtha pulls small.
 
I'm relieved to hear that all is not lost. Ok...will check the pH of my sludge...add more NaOH as needed...and pull small quantities of solvent...and evap off what I have.
