Post in thread 'official extraction help thread'Okay this is my first time posting on here hope I did this correctly!
Once you basify your solution do you then cool down before adding hot naphtha, or does it matter, cooling solution and/or heating naphtha?
The specific heat capacity of water is much higher than that of naphtha, so adding warm naphtha to the cooled base solution would be largely pointless. Aim to do your pulls at between 40 to 60°C perhaps depending on your naphtha. It's not so big of a deal though - good results have also been reported when performing the pulls at room temperature, and higher temperatures tend to give rise to a darker coloured product.Okay this is my first time posting on here hope I did this correctly!

Not necessarily - you may well have succeeded in getting a really clean pull. Put the first pull in the freezer quick and carry on with the next ones, pronto! For an A/B extraction of MHRB, if my heptane pulls are clear, rather than yellow, does that indicate something has gone amiss?

lol. thanks for the cheerleading, appreciate the quick helpNot necessarily - you may well have succeeded in getting a really clean pull. Put the first pull in the freezer quick and carry on with the next ones, pronto!![]()
It doesn't matter if the heptane's "empty" - you can just reuse it in a later pull.lol. thanks for the cheerleading, appreciate the quick help
Right, thanks. I was more concerned that I had screwed up another batch, but some very lovely, white crystals are formingIt doesn't matter if the heptane's "empty" - you can just reuse it in a later pull.

because of the nature of how pH works, there should be no measurable difference if your soup is diluted 20x, or even 50x.
No there’s no need to dissolve your lye first, gentle stirring will do that when you add it to your bark, water mix.First time posting on here so not sure if im doing it right but was curious if I am able to add extra powdered lye to the base/solvent mix or should I first dissolve it in a separate container?
Nope, it's likely to get attacked by the solvent and you'll end up with contaminated product. A 10 or 20 ml glass pipette is ideal and should be easily available from online retailers pretty cheap.is a plastic syringe ok to use for pulling the solvent?
thanks, ill probably get a glass turkey baster type thingNope, it's likely to get attacked by the solvent and you'll end up with contaminated product. A 10 or 20 ml glass pipette is ideal and should be easily available from online retailers pretty cheap.
They're a bit dribbly due to their large opening. While that's broadly OK for recovering the main bulk of the naphtha from the pulls, you'd still be much happier were you to get a pack of Pasteur pipettes for the last bit. They're generally incredibly useful to have around for this and other hobbies.thanks, ill probably get a glass turkey baster type thing
The phyllodesThanks, will try adding a bit more to the mix, also I am using Acacia Acuminata, just to be sure which parts of the bark do I use?

I’m starting to second guess this a bit. I’ve always been anti-plastic, but many times i’ve looked to compatibility charts and seen contradicting info. Some plastics seem okay, like HDPE, but I’ve seen at least one chart that said to avoid it. Or there can be different severity’s for different hydrocarbons. Temperature can be a factor too, with some plastics you might only have issues warm. Another chart i saw recently seemed to emphasize that, in most cases, deformation is the common problem, and dissolution rarely occurs.Nope, it's likely to get attacked by the solvent and you'll end up with contaminated product. I have a bunch of sticks/twigs the largest being about 3cm wide (which I sustainably harvested off a broken branch of the tree) should I use all parts of the bark? The phyllodes![]()
Thanks for the info, yeah I was gonna use one with a rubber plunger so I think its best if I just get a glass turkey baster/ eyedropper thing, they're not too expensive anywaysIf it's an all PP syringe it might be OK. If it has a rubber plunger, that might get attacked by naphtha and they typically have a bit of lubricant which naphtha also dissolves.
Rinsing the (all-PP) syringe through a couple of times with some of the naphtha you'll be using might reduce the amount of plasticiser which leaches out during subsequent usage.
