Oven Dry Freebase-DMT?

Say you end up with some DMT and a little water, would it be alright to put it in the oven on 200 until dry? Or is that too hot and the freebase will evaporate with the water?

The hottest the oven can be is 135 F (57 C). Any hotter and the DMT will boil away into the air. Most ovens can’t go that low, or they are not accurate enough to trust at that temperature.

To speed up evaporation SWIM will put his stuff in a 500 ml crystallization dish (it’s basically a glass Pyrex bowl with a flat bottom) placed on an accurate digital hotplate set to 70 C (the dish never gets hotter than 50 C at that setting on SWIM’s hotplate) with a fan blowing air over the DMT.

One problem with using air is that it causes DMT N-Oxide to form, especially if heat is applied, so it’s not a good idea to completely dry it that way.

A better way to dry it is chemically using anhydrous magnesium sulfate. First dissolve your DMT in a tiny amount of warm naphtha or heptane (no hotter than 55 C, check it with a thermometer). Use just enough to dissolve the DMT. Then add anhydrous magnesium sulfate until the anhydrous magnesium sulfate no longer clumps when you add it. It absorbs the water and forms clumps when there’s water present only. Mix thoroughly and then filter out the anhydrous magnesium sulfate. Then freeze precipitate the DMT. A tiny bit of DMT will be present in the anhydrous magnesium sulfate, which you can recover by pouring a little more naphtha through it.

The beauty of this method is that DMT N-Oxide will not be encouraged to form.

69Ron,

you make it sound like a touch of DMT N-Oxide is a bad thing!

However, I've not really noticed any difference between fresh spice and stuff that has been sitting around for a week uncovered.

This leads me to believe that either so little oxide is formed in a weeks time that it doesn't taint the experience or the DMT N-Oxide's effects are pretty darn close to that of DMT.

Stuff that has been sitting uncovered for 6 months is another story all together.

Yeah, I guess I did make it sound that way. Actually SWIM prefers DMT N-Oxide over DMT. So yeah, it’s not a bad thing at all, unless you specifically want pure DMT.

It seems that heat + oxygen is needed to rapidly form DMT N-Oxide, without the heat and just a fan, very little DMT N-Oxide forms.
