ph and the noman tek?

Migrated topic.

i often hear people talking about how there is some degree of danger regarding sodium hydroxide contamination in STB extractions. so i have a couple of questions...

1.What is the ideal ph for the noman tek?
2.If you are careful not to allow any of the water layer into the collection jars, is there still a possibility of lye contamination?
3.How efficient is the ammonia wash for removing possible contaminants?

swim has a modification of the noman tek for sep funnel users...mix up a solution basified MHRB water as large as you choose in a large metal bucket. do hot pulls with OMS (which can be removed sloppily with a turkey baster) use the sep funnel as the collection jar, so any of the water layer that got into the baster can easily be drained out leaving a very clean and quickly removed dmt layer. evaporate in a pyrex baking dish for 1-2 days, freez percip, filter and then evap what drain through the filter and rexylatize.

this way you get the advantage of sep funnel accuracy without, the annoyance of it getting clogged over and over again!

1.What is the ideal ph for the noman tek?

pH 12 or higher is needed to ensure that most of the spice will be in freebase form. However pH should be checked after adding root bark as it will change from the original pH in your basic solution. a very black solution is a good indication.

2.If you are careful not to allow any of the water layer into the collection jars, is there still a possibility of lye contamination?

very little although its easy to rinse to be on the safe side. just take some lye and drop in some clean naptha see how much dissolves and thats how much you need to worry about.

3.How efficient is the ammonia wash for removing possible contaminants?

sodium carbonate pH 8-10 works fine for this. dunno much about the ammonia solutions people use for this purpose.
